Receivers Williams, Warfield and Duncan, of the Seaboard Air Line, their attorneys, and Governor Glenn and his attorneys for the state in the railroad rate litigation were in conference in the executive of fice of Governor Glenn several hours last night with reference tothe mat ter of impending rate legislation by the extra session of the legislature, i After the conference Governor Glenn said there was nothing that he could ido with reference to the matters eon- 'sidered. That the desire of the faea ! board officials was that they be given ;a healing before the legislative com mittee on the situation so far as their road is concerned. But that all he could 'tell then was that the matter of a hear ing for them rested entirely -with tue legislature and the committee hav ing the rate matters in charge. President Jarrett was also here wnu the Seaboard receivers. IN FAVOR OF PROHIBITION. Grover Franklin, wh'o cn Sunday night was taken up by Sheriff Butler and his deputies and hanged to a tree, is again in the hands of the law and stands a chance of recovery. The moh was so closely followed by the officers and law-abiding citizens, determined if possible to avert the lynching, that they did not have time to get their vic tim outside the corporate limits and hurriedly stringing him up to the first tree, and thinking they had riddled him with bullets, lied. On the arrival of the officers the negro was still alive and was immediately cut down and placed in the county jail. It is thought he will recover. A. C. Faulk, who was assaulted ny the nesro Saturday night is resting easily and his wounds are not regard ed as serious. Fifteen demities were patrolling the jail yard last night to avert any trou ble at the hands of a second moo. but remember that Pneumonia comes in the night. A few hours means so much and if you have Gowan's Pneumonia Cure in the house you have a safeguard. It does the work. Then there are no regrets. No "if I had only thought in time."v- Get it to-day, that is my advice. It costs only fifty cents a bottle and a bottle may save a life. I tell you we forget these things and knowing Gowan's cares I tell everybody about it. Don't wait till to-morrow but act now. Remarkable Decrease in the Death Rate of Babies During the Last Cen tury. "A century ago the anxious parent of the new-born babe had good reason to be nneasv." savs Dr. Woods Hutchin- j son, in writing on "The Irrepressible Tendency or Babies to tirow up," in the February Woman's Home Compan ion. "That was still the age of dirt and a huge infant mortality. Less than half the children born lived to be 5 years old in London, in 1750, ..5 per cent died and more than one-third psrished in the first year. Now such, a condition is rapidly rlisnnnoarinsr. and remains only in our slum and most ignorant peasant communities. "Today the average mortality to the first five years of child life in the entire United States is less than 20 per cent. The mortality for the first year, about 10 ner cent, and eliminating the slums and our foreign population the rate is nearly three per cent, lower yet. So that our baby, gentle reader, has 10 chances to one of reaching his first birthday, five to one of reaching his fifth, and three to one of attaining adult life. Surely this is not an outlook to justify serious worry or constant anxiety for fear that some dreadful thing will . happen." Thnt nir rastle which a girl builds during her courtship is almost sure to collapse shortly after she faces the parson with the man of her choice.
