The trial of two cases took up the entire morning in the police court. The first case tried was that cf Hy man Miller, the sou cf H. Miller, tht East Trade street tailor, who was char g;ed with conducting a paw brokerage business without a license. The prosecuting witnesses agjainsi Miller were three negro boys, Earnes' Green, Pinkney Hull and Albert McCul lough. Green testified that he had carrie: a suit of clothes to young Miller ano That Miller had loaned him $3 upor them, and that when he went to re deem his clothes Miller said they haa been sold. The ether two boys testified as tc borrowing money from Miller or, clothes at various times. Miller was represented by Mr. F. R McNinch, and Mr. Shannonhouse ap peared for the prosecution. The defense admitted having no li cense to do a brokerage business, bui contended that the transactions were gales, and not loans. The penalty for doing a brokerage business without a license is a fine ol from $50 to $100. The recorder bound Miller over U the higher court, and a $50 bond was required, which he gave, his fathei standing his security. Another long drawn out case wat the trial of two young men .Henrj Gerber and H. L. Glover, on the charge of laceny of order books from one G: A. Mc Arthur. McAithur who was in charge of an agency squad selling bocks indictee the young men for not turning the orcl ers they secured after having seciirec the SI deposit from customers. The prosecution was looked after bj Col. T. L. Kirkpatrick, while Mr. L. E; Williams represented the defendants After hearing the evidence, the re. ccrder did not think there was a protp able cause, and the young men wert released. , - Earnest Phillips, a negro was charg ed with the larceny of $8 from Mr Will Andrews, a merchant. He wa? bound over to court, and a bend of $10C wras required. The only other cases in court were those against four white hoboes, charg ed with vagrancy. They were fined ?lc and the costs each. FREED BY "HUNGRY JURY." Talesman Charged With Rushing Ver dict to Get Home to Supper. Chicago, Feb. 27. Alxe Gustafson, accused of practicing medicine without a license, was acquitted "because his case was rushed at the hands of a hun gry jury." At least so says Assistant State's Attorney Hoffman, the prose cutor. The jury went out at 6 p. m. and returned a sealed verdict after ten min utes' deliberation. The state immedi ately entered a motion for a new trial. "There is no doubt that the putting of a case into the hands of a jury at supper time, without giving them any thing to eat, often hastens a verdict to the benefit of a defendant," declar ed Prosecutor Hoffman.
