Left Handed Batters Make Higher Average The. player who bats from the left side of the plate is not a better bat ter than his team mate who bats from the opposite side, but the former has one great advantage. He is nearer first base, and when he swings at the ball he throws himself right into his stride to make the sprint to first base. This makes it possible for him to beat out an infield hit, which even a faster run ner who bats right-handed could not do, and the result is that many hits are earned by the left-handed hitter, which ordinarily terminate in an out for the right-hander. Just nine players in the American league hit better than .300 during the season, and all of these were "left handers. Cobb led the league,, with an average of .350, and the next eight men were Kay, Orth, Crawford Stone, Killian, Clymer, Flick and Nichols. Orth and Killian are pitchers, but showed they could hit the ball by batting .324 and .320,. respectively. Lajoie has the distinction of being the first right-hander . to loom up in the average with a percentage of .299. Fifteen out of the first 20 are left handers. Conditions in the National League are not so strong for left handers, but they were up among them, the most prominent being Beaumont and Seymour. Fights Scheduled for Tonight. Allan's Magnetic Cough Syrup AND M ing News 1 HORSE SHOWS 'S WILL BE HELD A matter that has been discussed for some time is the formation of a circuit for southern horse shows and is now seems that the circuit will be formed and Charlotte is one of the cities in the list. The Jacksonville Times-Union says: "A circuit to include Jacksonville, At lanta, Macon. Savannah, Columbia, Augusta and Charlotte is likely to be formed this year for the promulga tion of the horse shows which most of these cities are now conducting each year. George Wilkins, who is arrang ing for the show, is enthusiastic re garding the project, and believes that the time is nearly ripe for the forma tion of such a circuit. "Mr. Wilkins contends that, if a cir cuit such as above outlined should be formed to embrace several weeks cf good shows each spring, all cf U12 fa mous horsemen of the north would make an annual pilgrimage to the south for the purpose cf exhibiting their thoroughbreds. It is believed that the Vanderbilts and ether mil lionaire owners who care net for ex pense, would be willing to shin their whole strings to the south, while un der the present conditions they are unwilling for their annimals to make the long trip just for the one or two shows which are annually held." , Greensboro Will Open. Season With Winston 1 Greensboro, N. C, Feb. 27. There is some talk of securing a ball park near er the business district of the city, but the management has selected the Cone Athletic Park as the ballfield for the season. The park will be enlarged and a new grandstand and bleachers erect ed.: They expect to build a new grand-' stand that will seat 2.500 persons, and new bleachers that will seat 1,500 per sons. The Cone park is hear Summit avenue, and is reasonably accessible. Better street car service than the city has ever before had is promised by the Greensboro Electric Company, which has outstanding orders for five new cars. ' , ' The first game of the Carolina Base ball Association will be played in this citv on April 30 between Greensboro and Winston-Salem. A number of inter-college games will be played in this city earlier in the season. McKevitt, manager of the team, man aged the Danville team last year and held second place in the league at the close of the season. He was captain of the Lynchburg team in 1906 when that team won the pennant of the Virginia League. The officers of the Greensboro Base ball Club are: J. L. Brandt, president: S. N. Cone, vice president; Garland Daniel, secretary and treasurer. C. G. Wright, J. F. Cobb, E. A. Brown and E. C. West, together with the above-named officers, constitute the board of directors. Jefferies Will Take Many Fighters to Alaska Jim Jeffries, who was made a flat tering offer a few weeks ago by a syndicate of sporting men of Fair banks, Alaska, to bring four fighters from California to that city to en gage in 25-round fights for big purses has accepted the offer, it is said, and is at present trying to decide on what fighters he will match up for the two battles. The fights there are to be held in conjunction with a big carnival which will be pulled off there on July 4th for which $50, 000 has been raised for prizes. Jeffries is to referee the fights and according" to the big fellow $25,000 of this amount is to be paid out for the two fights. Jim Flynn, the Pueblo heavyweight and Abe Attell, the featherweight champion, will most likely be partici pants in the two contests. Sumter Training School For the Big League Stars The Sumter (S. C.) Item says: ' The Gamecocks will begin the ball season with practically a new team, and Man ager Gunter pledges his reputation that he, will. have the fastest lot of young sters ever gotten together in a minor league team.. Sumter bids fair to be a training school for the big league stars'. AsheviHe As a "Sporting City" Asheville, N. C, Feb. 27. Judge Spears Reynolds, of Asheville, is ne gotiating with Vanderbilt University and the University of North Carolina ! looking to the selection of Asheville as the place for annual football games be tween these two great southern univer sities. The games are to be played an nually on October 31, and it is believed that Asheville, if it can be shown that ciiffioipntlv lsi'P"! rvnwfls will hp nt- uaufcu, win fjt; ticietieu owing iu its central location. At any rate Judsre Reynolds is confident that Asheville has a show and negotiations are on. In view of the fact that Asheville is what might be called a "sporting city" and with few really good football games, it is believed that great crowds would be attracted here by the annual football game between these two uni versities. Atlanta Boy Tc Play in Charlotte The Georgian of yesterday says: Roy Kitchings will leave March 1 to join the Charlotte baseball club for spring practice. Kitchings has been playing with amateur clubs in Atlan ta for a good many years. He played with the strong Carter &. Gillespie club last season which won the City League pennant. Help Comes Quickly When Hyomei is Used For Catarrh. The quick relief that comes from the Hyomei treatment for catarrh is most remarkable. Put a few drops of liq uid Hyomei in the little pocket inhaler that comes with every outfit, and be fore you have used the treatment for five minutes you will notice relief. from your catarrhal troubles. It gives a tonic healing effect to the air you breathe, - kills all catarrhal germs, stops the poisonous secretions, and soothes the irritated mucous mem brane. Hyomei will destroy all disease germs in the nose.' throat and lungs and make a quick and permanent cure of catarrh. So strong is R. H. Jordan & Co's belief in the power of Hyomei to cure all; catarrhal troubles that with every S1.00 outfit they give a guarantee to refund the money unless the remedy gives satisfaction. It may be impossible to take some thing from nothing,-but you come pret ty near it when you take the conceit out of some people. : 1 "T .. n: Lx Th8 Kind You Have Always uougm Bears the Signature of ,-.o Bears the Signature of -'. c Bean the Signature of .The Kind You Have Always saugn Tha Kind You nave Always wugni LEGAL NOTICES COMMISSIONER'S SALE.
