AT THE CALL TO ARMS. The gleeful fan begins to dream of pen nants flying pant The Winter of his Discontent is over at last He grabs the sporting page each day and feeds upon the dope. His heaving bosom bulging with the old '"eternal hope," But in his lowly, humble home with heavy care-worn sigs, The Umpire turns and bids his wife a long and last good-bye. The Manager, i hough worried some, is likewise blithe and gay With interviews and pictures in the papers every day He sees a lovely chance ahead to win undying fame And to have the Bugs and Bugettes cheering wildiy at his name But with the peaceful winter done nc hope of fame ahead The Umpire slowly packs his grip an: wishes he were dead. The Player throws a fit of joy, for pay days now are near No more he'll have to give up meat to save five cents for beer No moro he'll dwell obscurely thf hero of the age, His classic features daily will adorn some sporting page But bidding all his friends with heat bent low in gloom, The blighted Umpire wearily prepares to meet his doom. Wit h curses echoing afar with groanr and gibes end jeers With "Kill the bloody robber" ringin? daily in his ears , With howls and growls and angry snarls the center of attack With players dancing on his feet and pounding on his back He stands a lonely figure but with all this, fellow fan He's the Big Stick of his party and the Roosevelt of his clan.
