Winston Signs Special to The News. Winston-Salem, N. C, March 10. A 200-pound pitcher has boon signed for the Winston Blues. His name is Eddie Wills and he hails from Illinois. Man ager Carter, of the local baseball team, who signed him, thinks .'.Kit Will:-; will be able to keep the hoavy hitters on the opposition baseball teams guess ing this summer. Other players who have signed, up are from St. Lords, Camden, X. J., and Washington, D. C. Manager Carter, who has been off on an extended trfrur in search of players, will return the latter part of the week. He has all the men needed for his team in sight. Owing to the dispute that arose as to Sumter's title to the six men Winston-Salem was negotiating for, the deal has been declared off. Active work will begin next week on an the extensive improvements at Fair view Park. Kinetic Energy Kinetic is a good word. It means "power to make things go." Will the veteran meet defeat at the hands cf the youngster, or has he a ghost of a show of winning? Sad to relate, it is the opinion of many enthusiasts that the ghost will not be walking in this case, and that Schaefer, who was an expert at the game before Hoppe was born, is nevertheless doomed to taste defeat at the hands cf his young rival. Should Schaefer meet defeat, the boy's victory will be framed with all the ornaments of an ironmonger's shop. But a comparatively short time ago the vote-vans were disposed to laugh at Uoppe's claim for lccognkion, and they are credited with telling him to go and get a reputation. Baseball Schedule of Bingham School Ashevillc, N. C, March 11. The Bingham School baseball team this sea son promises to be one of the best aggregations in the history of the ;-chooi, and the prospects are bright for a very successful team. Captain Har bour is very sanguine that his team will he able to hold their own with the best, teams in their cass. Coach Pitman has large squads out for prac tice every day and the boys are work ing hard to get into first-class shape. Four of last, year's players are back and will play their old positions, and the new talent is showing up remark ably well. The following schedule of games for the son has been arranged by Man ager Duke: juCh a. Carson and Newman Col lege, at Asheville. March L'l Mars Hiil College at Ashe ville. T ON TIE FLY It is said that Atlanta has a team of ball tossers 10 to 25 per cent stronger than that of last season. The Boston Nationals will report at Augustn, Ga., for practice Friday. The annual race meet at Aiken, S. C, will be held on the 24th and 26th of this month. Five representatives of the press are in Atlanta from New York to report the piactico games of the Highlanders for their respective papers. The club has an official photographer with them. Dallas, Texas, is to be the scene of a wrestling tournament for the Texas championship towards the end of this month. Manager McGraw of the New York Giants says that Marlin, Texas, is the ideal training camp. Terry McCJovern and "Young Cor bett," according to report, are to be members cf a traveling baseball team the coming season. The Newark hall club, now owned by George Staliings, will be called the "Indians," instead of "Sailors." Several Texas League teams are receiving the benefit of training "with major league teams this spring. The number of minor leagues that are being organized apparently indi cates that the promoters do not take times. Many baseball fans believe that the long trip now being taken by the Chicago White Sox will he of little ben efit in putting them in condition for a hard pennant race. j Sc far the hexing bouts at the new ! Raleigh, N. C, March 11. The or ganization of the Eastern Carolina League has been perfected, and is com posed cf the following teams: Raleigh, Wilmington, Rocky Mount, Kineton, Goldoboro and Wilson. GUNTER BELONGS TO SUMTER. Secretary Farrell, of national author ity, according to a Sumter (S. C.) spe cial, says that Guy Gunter, who, it was stated yesterday, had jumped his contract with Sumter and had accepted the management of Rock Hill's team, belongs to Sumter. He says that if Farrell's decision is right he will stay with the Sumter, and give his best f service. WAS GREATLY DISAPPOINTED. The Winston-Salemites were very hopeful of getting the six Sumter players they had bargained for, and were greatly disappointed when they did not succeed; but Manager Robert Carter is on an expedition in the north and west signing a fast bunch. The State. NOT THE ONLY "COBB." . Ty Cobb, of Detroit, is not the only big leaguer who would like to play semi-professional ball in Chicago if he can not get what he demands in the American League. Tommy Leach, who is said to be dissatisfied with the Pitts burg club, has also offered to go to Chicago and play. SID SMITH'S WORK. Sid Smith, the Camden, (S.
