Durham, N. C. March 12. For some time past a most destructive insect has infested the storage of the Ameri can Tobacco Company, in this city, and thousands of pounds of tobacco have been destroyed. Every available means has been exercised to get rid of the in sect, but has proven fruitless and it stems impossible. Some of the tobacco invaded by these creatures has been in storage for seTeral years and the insects consume it remarkably fast. These small insects were first no ticed in this section last summer and the people were puzzled to know from whence they came, and their origin in this community was soon found out. The company employed a large force of hands at one time, working at the various storages, and by means of using steam tried to smoother them out, but it was reported that tnis was nlsn unsuccessful. The company is a heavy loser. Their loss will proba bly reach several thousand dollars. At times when hogsheads are opened, the i tobacco is decreased by "half . COMMENCEMENT AT NEWELL. Ranson Preaches Strong Ser mon on That Pure and Undefiled Re liCion, Which Makes us Visit the Fatherless and the' Widow. Rev. A. J. Ranson delivered a very touching sermon last evening at East Avenue church from James 1 : 27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father of this. To visit the fath erless and widows in their affliction and to keep himself unspotted from the world." The speaker said, in part: "The Bible tells us about a great many things but does not define as many things as we would wish it has defined this religion pure and un defiled. "The first thing I call your attention to is that pure religion and undefiled must stand the test before God and the Father. It is not enough to have a religion that stands the test before the sinner, or church or synod or men. Pure religion must stand the test be fore God ?.nd the Father. If n. man's religion stands the test before God and the Father, the King and Lord, I don't care if his religion falls down before the sinner of the church if it stands the test before God, he is safe for all eternity. "There are other things to enter in to in this great thing called religion it is net to be confined to simply one or two things it is the foundation laid out to the Christian in the Christian life. I believe it is sympathy. Hun dreds of men are being won into the kingdom through the expression of sympathy on the part of those who know that Jesus Christ is a mighty Savior and are not afraid to express their sympathy to a. man who is in trouble. "If you are a child of the living God, that thing, which, more than any other thing, characterizes the Son of God, ought to characterize you. If that thing is sympathy, why are we not more sympathetic with God's people? "In the second place, we must keep ourselves unspotted from the world. How many of God's people do need to come back to God and be cleansed. How they do need the power of Jesus Christ and the blood of Jesus Christ to wash away their sins. I declare to you If we are living unclean lives, spotted, covering up our iniquity, not confessing our sins, we are living lives that are not pure and undefiled before God the Father. Thanks be to God we have a fountain for every Christian man whose life has been spotted. I am glad to reveal to you the one who can take away the sins of the world. "Will your religion stand the test before God the Father? "My last remark is that no man's religion is that kind of religion un less he has opened wide his heart and let in the Son of God, who is able to teach a nio.n pure and undefiled reli gion, keep him unspotted from this world, and take entire possession of his entire being. May God grant that this may be your experience tonight. CASE AFTER CASE. i Plenty More. Like This in Charlotte. Scores of Charlotte people can tell you about Doan's Kidney Pills.
