1 HE CHARLOTTE NEWS, MARCH 14, 1908. 10 WHERE THISTLE AND THE HEATHER GROW Miss Alexander Concludes Her TraveJ Talk With a Description cf a Visit to Scotland Miss Wade Sings and Miss Porter Recites at Y. W. C. A. ,Tho little lecture room of the Y. W. C. A. was well filled last night by those who haa come to hear Miss Julia Alexander's concluding "Travel Talk," as well as the solos and recitations or a Scotch program. Miss Wade, of the Presbyterian College, sang at the be ginning of the pre gram "I'm Wearing Awa', " and at the conclusion "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose." The audience was delighted with these solos and with the remarkable power of expression of little Miss Ruth Tabor Porter, who, dressed most fetehingly in Highland Scotch costume, recited "My Highland Mary" and several Scotch poems. Miss Alexander is a charming speak er. What she didn't see on her jaunt across Europe was not worth seeing. The hours of her journey were packed with observation, and she has the rare gift of being able 10 make others see through her own eyes. She took her hearers to Loch Katrine, Abcrfoil, Sterling Castle and many of the scenes which Scott has immortalized in "The Lady of the Lake." Edinboro was explored in a two weeks delightful stay. As she unwove the thread of her narrative, one could see with the eye of the mind the Kilties as they came down from the big castle that frowns with watch-dog jealousy over the city, on their way to attend tue military service of a Sun day; the brilliant stretch of Princess avenue with its gardens and trees and the flower-clock in particular which keeps the time of day; the rosy cheeks of the Scotch girls, who, the speaker declared are remarkably beautiful, due in large part to their clear complexion, on which Nature takes delight in doing china painting; one could read with her the solemn league and covenant, sign ed in old Greyfriars church, and see the very place where the ink gave out and the signing was continued in the life's blood of tho Covenanters; could hear the little birds which still sing in the trees at Ayr, and which Burns de scribed in one of his poems, contrast ing their blitheness with his own earn ing care. Contrasts between the Scotch and the continental peoples were brought out. One of these was the difference in the treatment of dogs. In Europe dogs are beasts of burden in some countries. In others they are despised. The Scotch adore their collies. Look ing down from the battlements 0i Edinboro castle Miss Alexander saw a prettyfiower plot on the steep hillsides and learned that this was the burying place of the mascots of the Scotch regiments in the castle. They had lit tle slabs at the head of the graves with inscriptions on them and tne tiny cemetery was kept ever fresh and green. In England there is a law against using check reins on horses. In Dum'erline, Andrew Carnegie has rifts to his native town, and yet the villagers were heard j by the traveller criticizing the cona tions in that they were taxed to keep them up. Near the tomb of David Hume there is a monument to Abraham Lincoln wic a kneeling negro on it, thankful for manumission. Not the least interesting part of the narrative was the description of John Knox's home and the way in which his memory lives in the mind of the Scotch people even unto this day. THE WEATHER. Forecast For Charlotte and Vicinity. Fair tonight and Sunday. State Forecasts. Washington, D. C, March 14. For North Carolina and South Carolina: Fair tonight and Sunday. One of the latest additions to Char lotte's mercantile circles is the firm of Farley & Askins, who will open a store containing a handsome stock of women's and men's furnishings at No. 209 North Tryon street on March 21st. This firm operates about forty stores in various cities cf the north and south, and does a tremendous credit business. The firm will also have a millinery department, which will be among the finest in the city. It is sure of appre ciative customers in the Charlotte public. TWO SITES FOR FIRE STATION Finance Committee Postpones the Selection. Two sites for the new fire station have been offered the finance commit tee of the board of aldermen, which has the matter in hand. One of these sites is opposite Mr. R. N. Littlejohn's near the graded school, and will cost $2,500. The other is at the corner of Park avenue and South Tryon street in front of the old pipe foundry's plant. This site has been offered to the city for $C00. The committee thought the sites should be visited in a body, nd action was, therefore, deferred until a later date. TO PUT IN SWINGING DOORS Finance Committee Authorizes Fire Chief's Recommendation. At the meeting of the finance com mittee of the beard of aldermen last night, Mr. D. B. Smith, of the school board, appeared and asked that the committee authorize the changes and improvements in the school buildings which have been recommended by Fire Chief Orr. Tim was done. The putting in of doors opening on the outside in all the buildings, and the fixing of the stairway at the color ed school will begun at once. Weather Conditions. His re ply was so satisfactory that the young lady's father ordered six bottles. Be fore she had finished two she was out driving, and today is teaching school in Arizona, hearty and well.
