t THECHARLOTTE NEWS, MARCH 20, 1908, 2 THE STRONGEST , GUARANTEE of quality is in the association of names. The name Leach Chemical Co., is inseperable from that of VIRGIN OIL OF PINE which is put up for dispensing through druggists only in H ounce vials, each vial securely sealed in a lound wooden case. Worthless imita tions have been offered to the public, but always under an assumed name through which the initiator hides his identity and endeavors to evade re sponsibility for the deception. Virgin Oil of Pine compound pure will break up a cold in 24 hours and cure any cough that is curable. The name on the wrapper is your guar antee: Leack Chemical Co., CINCINNATI. OHIO. Properties, uses and directions with ! each vial. 1 BARGE BETWEEN PH HEi, ill I G Philadelphia, Pa.. March 20. The new barge service shortly to be inaug urated between Philadelphia between Philadelphia and New Bern. N. C. will probably have its Philadelphia termi nus at Pier 31 North, below the public service pier at Green street. That pier is owned by the Kerr Salt Manufacturing Co. From information that reached the dock department tie owners of pier 31 will lease part of it should a satisfactory arrangement as to rental be conculded. William A. Robertson, representative of the J. B. Blades Lumoer Co., of Newbern, visited the dock department. The Blades Lumber Company is con fident that a good business in general freight can be built up between Phila delphia and New Bern by the establish ment of this wekly service. The barges to be employed will be large and modern boats capable of carrying costly cargo in sufficient quantity to make the compromise a paying one. On the run from New Bern lumber will compise the bulk of cargo. Shallow water at New Bern prevents the promoters from using steamships, but should the waterways be deepened, the company later will put on modern power vessels. An enterprise somewhat similar, started several years ago between Bal timore and eGorgetown, S. C, proved a great success, the company at present passing between the two ports with dif ficulty. Rhode Island For Bryan Providence, R. I., March 20. All ar rangements have been completed for the democratic state convention which is to assemble in this city tomorrow afternoon to select the delegates-at-large to the Denver convention. The convention, which will meet in Music Hall, promises to be a large and en thusiastic gathering. Bryan sentiment will predominate in the convention. The Nebraska leader will be indorsed for the presidency and the delegates in all probability will be instructed for him. Interest in the convention has been increased by the announcement j that Senator Thomas P. Gore, of Ok- lahoma, will address the gathering. CONNECTICUT DEMOCRATS Meeting Held to Organize the Bryan State League. New Haven. Conn., March 20. Lead- in? flpmocrnts of Connecticut were much in evidence in this city today. For tonight a ban quet and a mass meeting have been arranged, the latter to be addressed by United States Senator Gore, of Oklahoma. The Day's Work Secures $1,145 TheGrdnd lotalin The Campaign For The Y. W. C. A. Building Now Reaches $2545 Com mittees fine Work. The second day's work by the build ing campaign committees of the Young Women's Christian Association was a most dreary one, as every citizen of Charlotte knows. The weather man did his worst in furnishing weather. A committee will wait on him this after noon. Doubtless tomorrow he will do better. In spite of the bad weather the most enthusiastic meeting of the campaign ers yet held took place at 12:30 j o'clock at the ball room of the Sel- l wvn Mnrp nnrmnittpp workers than were expected came and all were en thusiastic. Some people think that the first day of the campaign would be the great day of the canvass, but they are doomed to disappointment as today's report totals $1,145.00. New commit tees are being formed today and these will be in good working order at-once. These committees are headed by the following popular young ladies: vMiss Wadsworth, Miss Burwell and Mrs. Butt. Promises of aid in securing sub scriptions were made on all hands. Among the gentlemen present today were tne following, snowing umi me effort of the women is arousing the en thusiasm of even the men of the city: Rev. Dr. W. M. Kincaid, Rev. Wm. Duncan, Hon. E. R. While responding to a fire alarm yes terday afternoon, sent in from box No. 31, corner Sixteenth and Brevard streets, one of the big roans pulling the chemical wagon of the Church street, department dropped dead in the harness The wagon was speeding along on the straight stretch of road from North Tryon street extension to A street, and when in front of the Elba Company's plant the horse was suddenly attacked, and swerved from one side of the road to the other, fin ally falling. The hosemen jumped quickly from the wagon, but the horse was past aid and died wtihout a strug gle. The cause of death is not known, though it is believed that either a blood vessel burst or the heart failed. The wagon did not reach the scene of the fire. Fortunately the blaze was a small one anu was put out with a tub of water. This was the second alarm from this box in two days. The loss of this horse is the first in three years. The department, says Chief Orr, has had 12 head in this time, and has not even had the bad luck to have a crippled animal . in this time. The veterinary bill has not run over $30.
