Moffett, - V- from time to time, on account, with the persons with whom he was deal ing, and his counsel referred fre quently to the fact that the panic had come on last fall, catching num bers of small merchants. A good many of the witnesses against Mr. Arant said that his character was good. Mr. Ray Lawing said he helped Mr. Arant to take stock on the first of the year and found that his stock inventoried $9G5. Mr. McRae tried to make the witness admit that Mr. Arant showed him $1,100 worth ol accounts on his books but the witness insisted that he could not remember about this. Mr. Moody stated that Mr. Arant declared to. him about the middle of December that he had a prospect ive buyer in the person of Mr. W. H. Andrews: that Mr. Arant said his stock inventoried ?1,500 and that he only owed $300. Upon such represen tation he was allowed to continue his account with Chambers & Moody, DON'T miss the handsome bargains agreeing to make small payments in shirts and shoes, neckwear and monthly. men's furnishings at my removal sale. While Mr. Link had said that Mr. L. Rosenbaum, 27 West Trade. Arant stated that the largest single account he owed him was something like $97, Mr.Messick declared that Arant owed his firm $221 and had said to him that the bulk of all he owed to Mr. Messick, with whom he did the most of his trading. The star witness of the occasion was Mr. R. S. Reed, who was a sort of Sam Weller on the -stand. His keen, sharp replies to counsel amus ed the court room, and he was finally submitted to a gruelling examination, A l-i-inr n if t-p i 111 w 1111:11 uc 111 ihiy iiinm.-imv Law Building. See L. W. The ginning report proved a farce as a market influ ence, 11,261,000 bales, and this indi cates a total crop of less than 11,500, 000 bales. Cables this morning were a shade better 4;han due, though spot business wr poor and' the opening spurt in prices attracted numerous orders to sell on the rise, and there was a sharp decline of about 15 points. At the bottom prices there was some support, but it was limited. Thereaf ter the market seemed to be a waiting affair, but sentiment was largely bear ish. The weather map was generally fa vorable, though some rains fell in the central and eastern belt. Prospects of warmer and fair encouraged hope of further improvement in the crop months. Some think the ginning figures will induce buyers to enter the market, but trade conditions are unfavorable. Morehead & Co. I take pleasure in stating that Alexander Webb, of Warren County, N. C, used Mrs. Joe Person's Remedy with wonder ful success. The doctors said h'is leg would have to be ampu tated, but seeing Mrs. Joe Per son's medicine advertised, he sent for it and the Wash, and in three months' time he was a sound and active young man. He had been confined to bed and room for two years or more, and I do not doubt, if it had not been for the wonderful Rem edy and Wash, he would have been a maimed man for life. Yours truly, J. D. WEBB. owed Jamison & Co. $45.10. At the first of the year Mr. Reed had gone to see Arant who said -that he had $1,500 worth of stock, owed between $300 and $400, and had paid up the whole of the Messick debt, which was only $10. Mr Messick having said the debt to him was about $221, Mr. Arant's lawyers tried to make Mr. Reed say that Mr. Arant stated that the $10 account was a new one, and that there remained an old account, but the witness was firm in maintaining that he had specifically inquired if the S10 debt was all the defendant owed Mr. Messick and that he stated unequivocally that it was. Messrs. Geo. H. Brockenbrough, P. H. Philan and others testified and Mr. Shannonhouso introduced evi dence that the defendant's debts amounted to over $1500. Mr. Avant was bound over to court in the sum of $200. TIE TRADESMAN'S STOCKS NEW CHURCH AT CHADWICK. Hon. Locke Craig to Make Commence ment Address. There is to be a new Methodist church at Chadwick. It has been de cided to erect a $5,000 or $6,000 build ing between the Chadwick and Hos kins mills on Middle street. The plans are now being matured and it is ex pected that work will begin within, the next two or three months. Rev. W. O. Rudisill is the able pas tor of this church, which is now wor- I shining in a hall near the Chadwick mill. The commencement exercises of the 'southern Industrial Institute will be held on Tuesday, April 14, and Pres ident Baldwin has been fortunate enough to secure Hon. Locke Craig as the orator for this occasion. There vill be declamation contests between the young men on Friday April 14; drills, plays, etc., on Wed nesday and on Thursday the address by Mr. Craig. Orders left now will be ready for delivery by Easter. t g Club J. S. Bache & C's Cotton Letter. New York, March 20. The selling movement continued this morning with some slight interruptions. Open ing prices reflected the improvement in the Liverpool market and May opened up about 11 points while July touched 10.03 and March 9.89. The government ginning report showed- 11,206.000 bales ginned and while the general opinion made these figures bullish, trie rally was so short lived and the selling pressure so great that the traders hammered prices and market sold down below the levels of yesterday. The lack of sustaining power made the professionals bearish and this along with southern selling broke May to 9.77 and July to 9.73 and March 9.70. These prices were at about the levels of the October last slump at the time of the panic. The market ruled feverish and un settled during the afternoon session. We look for lower prices. J. S.
