1 HE CHARLOTTE NEWS, MARCH 20, 1 908, 0 Training Of a Rockefeller New York. March 21 John D. Rockefeller III., heir presumptive to one of the largest fortunes in the world, was two years old today. From all ac counts he is a fine, healthy, blue-eyed youngster, who is just beginning to take a lively interest in what goes on about him. He is the idol not only of his parents, but also of his grandfather, John D. Rockefeller, Sr. The latter has grandchildren in the McCormick and the Strong families, but these young persons, who are destined to be tre mendously wealthy, will have meager fortunes compared with John D. the third. The heir to the millions is being brought up in accordance with the tra ditions of the Rockefeller family, in other words, means that the follie:-; and foibles of the sons of many million aires of today will be tabooed. The youngster will find in his father a most excellent example of a million aire who prefers the simple life to the pleasures of high society. In his tastes, his every -day habits, his pleasures and his beliefs John D. Rockefeller, Jr., is a most striking contrast to the ordinary son of a millionaire father. Possessed of a fortune which would enable him to gratify any extravagant wish, which would enable him to pay half a million for a yacht and think it no waste, to support a racing stable or to buy a princely estate, he wants none of them. To his mind it is pleasanter to work daily, to live quietly at home and tc. devote much of his time to religion and charity. Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.. who was Miss Abby Aldrich, daughter of Senator Aldrich of Rhode Island, shares her husband's tatees. Notwith standing the wealth and social promi nence to which she has been accustom ed all her life, Mrs. Aldrich cares noth ing for society and its frivolities. She is pretty and attractive and could easi ly shine should she care to enter the lists. But her interests are in opposite directions. She has advauced ideas about education and is a student of literature. She is interested in practical charity and much prefers to investigate and relieve a genuine ease of distress than to spend an afternoon with a dressmaker talking about the fit of a gown. From this it must not be imagin ed that she does not dress well, for the does. But she cares for dress only as a woman of her station who has no infatuation for society should care for it. It is not a passion with her and does not distract her mind from the larger problems of life, of which she is an earnest student. Young Mrs. Rockefeller is not par ticularly fend of outdoor sports, al though she shares her husband's love for horses. She golfs a little and car. ewim and sail a small boat. She much prefers to read a solid work on an edu cational topic than to dance or attend a dinner party. Ai 'J 4. THE WEATHER 4" ? Forecast For Charlotte and Vicinity. A press dispatch says: Money was raised and committees appointed to wage a campaign for better organization among the farmers. Addresses were made by President H. O. Kerns, Interstate Organizer S. G. Adams, and others. The speakers touched on the deeds of the "Night Riders" in Kentucky, which was dis cribed as deplorable, but brought about by conditions, which had become almost unbearable.
