THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, APRIL 7, 1908. 8 V - I h , i 1 1 1 i ,1 J! rohibition Bringing i. New Life to And Jo The benefits of prohibition find ad ditional confirmation in the statement i-jl Mayor liroek. of Wadesboro. In an interview he said that the court rec ords showed an average of 2-3 arrests per month during the reign there of sa loons, of which there were nine. For the past two months of prohibition in Wadesboro there have been seven ar rests, three in January and four in February. it Union's Medical Depository. The Wadesboro Ansonian of last Thursday had the following to say of conditions there since the Anson coun ty medical depository has been in op eration: "The Anson county medical deposi tory has been in operation just one month last Saturday and at the close of business then. Hi:', proscriptions had been tilled. Win.? for the sacramental purposes had been furnished to one church and the entire business has been verv satisfactory to the keeper. Mr. J. A." McRae; there not being so much annoyance as some people pre dicted when this method of conduct ing the whiskey business in Anson was first proposed. Below are the names of the physicians who have written prescriptions and the number each has writ un : "Dr. E. S. Ashe, county physician. 2C: Dr. Hathcock. of Stanly county. 1: Dr. Barrel t. 2: Dr. Ross. Dr. Ben nHt. !; Dr. .1. M. Covington. Sr.. 4; Dr. Misenhcimer. 1: Dr. Thompson. IS: Dr. Smith. 2: Dr. Duulap. 4: Dr. Hart, t;; Dr. Boyett. 1; Dr. Wyatt. 4; Dr. Thomas, colored, !. So far no person is known to have gotten drunk on whiskey sold by the depository." Prohibition in Rockingham. In Rockingham prosperity is increas ing under prohibition. A large number of residences, several new stores and a new Baptist church are going up. Something like $100,000 is now being invested in buildings. The town mar shal said recently to a News corres pondent that under saloons he used to make $-." a month extra. Now he on ly makes $." extra. The extra money is a percentage of receipts for arrests and lines. WHAT'S IN THE WHISKEY BUSI NESS FOR YOU. The saloon-keepers all may be very nice men, But what is there in it for me? I blow in my monev and wake in the PEX. " So what is there in it for me? Of course I'm as welcome as flowers in May When I come to the JOINT to squander inv pay. But I wake in the COOLER THE very next dav: And that's all there is in it for me. All over this country we're swimming in booze But what is there in it for me? The saloon-keeper's kids are wearing new shoes, But what is there in it for me? The distiller's share is an automobile. A carriage, the retailer's share of the ileal. But I'm wearing shoes that are down at the heel; And that's all there's in it for me. The booze-maker's wife may be dressed like a queen. But what is there in it for me? My wife hasn't duds that are fit to be seen, So what is there in it for me? The beer brewer's son may be dressed like a dude. While I'm wearing garments exceed ingly rude, But if we vote "wet" I'm afraid I'll go nude; And that's all there's in it for me. My thirst costs me more than my clothes and my food. And that's all there's in it for me. The booze took my money, and did me no good. And that's all there's in it for me. The brewer is rich, he has gold by the peck, The bar-man gets paid, he's always on deck, But whatever I get, I get in the necic; And that's all there's in it for me. Why should I vole that the curse may endure Fur. what is there in it for me? I'm bound to vole "dry", on election day, sure, For what is there in it for me? A new self respect, and a chance for my life, New dollies for the kids, and a home for my wife, The beginning of peace, the end of all strife; And that's what there's in it for me. BIRMINGHAM AND ATLANTA. Decrease in Crime and Increase in Prosperity Under Prohibition. (From the New York Outlook, March Mill.) "Putting it roundly, according to the reports of the police magist rates, prohi bition has reduced the amount of crime in Birmingham one-third, and in At lanta one-half. In his report to the mayor at the end of the first month of prohibition, Judge N. B. Fcagin, of Bir mingham, makes the following state ment: " 'The decrease in arrests average about as follows in comparing January, 1908, under prohibition with January, 1907, with saloons: Aggregate arrests, decrease 33 1-3 per cent.; for assault with intent to murder, 22 per cent.; gambling, 17 per cent.; DRUNKEN NESS, 80 PER CENT.; disorderly con duct, 35 per cent.; burglary and grand larceny, 33 per cent.; vagrancy, 40 per cent.; wife beating, 70 per cent.' "Several times during the past eight weeks there has not been a single pris oner before the recorder s court at Atlanta charged with drunkenness. Wednesday, January 29th, at the ses lint w,is called bv the lncnl papers 'the smallest court ever held,' Wadeshoro Rockingham there was only one prisoner at the morning session. It was about this time that the newspapers recorded another extraordinary event in the his tory of the city. For the first time in many years, the jail was for several days empty. "Commenting 011 the situation as it is in Atlanta and Birmingham, the Birmingham News says: 'For 10 years Birmingham has not enjoyed so order ly a period as it has since the first of January. The moral improvement in the city has been marked since prohi bition went into effect. The newspap ers are no longer giving space to re ports of murders, shooting and cut ting scrapes, personal altercations, and other disorders, as they formerly did, for the reason that the regard for law and order in this community is very much more in evidence since the re moval of the liquor traffic." Efforts to heal the ulcer by meant) of salves, plasters and other external remedies alwavs result in failure, because such treatment can have no possible effect on the blood, where the deadly germs and morbid matter form, and are carried through the circulation to the place.
