1 HE CHARLOTTE NEWS, APRIL S, 1908, F2 Opus Few it! Says Graham Virgil Quoted in Order to Describe Adequately the Scene of Activity at Sky scraper Banquet For Adams And Graham. fcl H W I IIll. IIUV I1L illV.UlllUVl V I of the Greater Charlotte graded school system, knows a heap of Latin but he doesn't know all the Latin that is known in the Graham family. Nnnouam. His brother. Prof. Archi bald Graham, knows a large area of it. This by way of preface: A day or so aso, Mr. W. W. Ward, Mr. D. Parks Hutchison, Mr. John Hen ry McAden. Mr. J. M. Oates, a News man, and several others were actively superintending: the building of the sky-scraper on Independence square. Much valuable information as to how a sky-scraper ought to be built might have been gleaned from the conversa tion. MoFt of it must perish. One word will 1)0 recorded and put in the records of The News files. The sun peeped over the Mellon store into the deep hole in the ground. Great grandsons of Ethiopia sang at their toil as they wheeled cement to the cavernous hollows in the red clay or as they tamped the concrete down. Others digged and shoveled. The big iron snout of the machine that cracks the stone turned around and around, emptying rock dust incessant ly. Mr. Jones, Ihe argus-eyed and red-headed foreman, who is the man in authority, saying to one "go," and he goeth. and to another "come," and he cometh (and cometh a-runnin', too) he war, stepping lively and pointing to this and that. Mr. Ernst, the repre sentative of the Equitable, had his coat off, and was looking into a hole to inspect the viscousness of the con crete that was filling it slowly up. yiap. dash, roar, bang. noise, hurry, energy, activity, bustle, do-a-about! These be words that might have an plhl to the living picture, red-clay framed, down in the sky-scraper pit. Mr. Ward had just finished a disser tation on concrete how to make it. what it costs, how it was discovered, when it emigrated from England to America, and all the like of that. Si lence settled for a moment on the im ' piomptu bosses of the job. Mr. Arch ibald Graham broke it. "Did you ever read Virgil?" he ask ed. "Yes," answered all the highly cul tured pro tem overseers at once. "Do you remember what he said about the building of Troy? It was this: "Opus fervit!" declared Mr. Graham. Which being interpreted is "The work burns" or "the work glows." $ Messrs. Thaddeus Warsaw Adams and Xeill 11. Graham went out to Eliz abeth Mills ?.Ionday night to speak on prohibition. The Hon. J. D. McCall had been scheduled to go but was pre vented by a sore throat. There was a fervent spirit in the audience, who kept interrupting the speakers with suggestions as to what they ought to speak about. He seemed to be a pretty well primed prohibi tion orator himself, and, indeed, when Messrs. Adams and Graham had fin ished he mounted the platform and ventured a few remarks, winding up with this hon.net for the speakers of the evening: "At the next prohibition speaking here, we will have the old original J. D. McCall. We'll grease his iron jaws up, so they can work, so' throat or no so' throat. Next time we won't have to listen to these little fices from town barkin' in place of the Old Original!" THE ROCK QUARRY PROBLEM Dangerous Hole st Foot of College Street Giving Trouble. How to get rid of the old rock quar ry at the foot of College street is a problem which the city administration lias to battle with now, and was about the only matter given attention by the, board of health last night. This matter has been up for discus sion several times, but so far it has been unsolveable. The hole is on the land of the rail road, but was dug by the city several years ago, and now is a great cavern of filthy water, which is a menace to life and health. . At the meeting of the board of al dermen Monday night, Fire Chief W. S. Orr stated that a fence should be plac ed around the hole, as there was great danger of children fallinrr in, thus caus ing the city to be liable for damages. Only a few days ago the city lost one of its finest mules in this hole, and this accident brought it forcibly to mind that something must be dona It is estimated that it would take 250,000 yards of dirt to fill the hole and this would cost about $50,000, a gigantic undertaking. Just what will be done in regard to the matter is uncertain, as none of the members so far have been able to hit. upon a feasable plan. The board of health, at its meeting last night, discussed the matter, and a committee consisting of Dr. B. J. Witherspoon was appointed to confer witn me aiuermen. to see it some plan could not be devised to rid the city ot this menace. It was also decided that no more trash be thrown in the hole, as there were several complaints from residents in this neighborhood that the burning rubbish was very bad. PYTHIAN MEETING. Special Meeting of Rathbone Lodge Tomorrow Night in Piedmont Build ing. There will be special session of Rathbone Lodge, Knights of Pythias, tomorrow night, in the hall in the Piedmont building.
