THE CHARLOTTE NEWS APRIL IS, 1908. 27th. Annual B. &L. Meeting Shareholders of Mutual Association Re-elect Old Board of Directors And was the equilibrium of the association disturbed. Saved Homes During Panic. Our receipts kept up remarkably well, and while the loans at that time could not be made with as much dis patch as is our custom, we were help ing many in financial distress by pay ing out cash on withdrawals. By this course some were, perhaps, saved from sacrificing valuable prop erties, and some escaped the loss of rr I homes bv being enabled to get the tormer Officers PrCSi cash which they had gradually accu j -r. nuilated here. dent S FlIlC Report. Gentlemen: According to the usual The $3,2r)0 is in 12 stock loans on our own shares. A year ago our assets amounted to $oGS.::S7.Si. Today the same ac count stands $4-j",4t;0.:,6. At the same date last year our individual profits were $33,917.82. This is now $43,278.71. We have 334 mortgages and stock notes with an average loan of $1,341 Among the stockholders, some being i hnnr.wors are 4 white churches, 3 custom and in compliance with the! ,,',,on f RnHpMR. These and similar organizations are begin ning to realize that this is the best by-laws, I herewith present the annual yeport of your secretary and treasu rer: The receipts and disbursements for the year are as follows: RECEIPTS. It is now my pleasure to present another report at the expiration of our fiscal year, March 31st, IOCS, which is, to my mind, far more grat ifying than the last. Our profits are greater, our shareholders are more numerous, our shares in force are greater, the demand for cur money and for the general service we give is much increased, and the popular ity of the association seems constantly growing. It must not be forgotten that we have but just passed through some thing of the financial panic, which has tested the strength and manage ment of the best institutions of the land. Some have been unable to stem the tide and it has resulted in weeding out the weak and those whose management has been loose and extravagant and it has neces sarily brought into prominence such as have been conservative and eco nomical. It must be gratifying to each of vou to realize that during the trying times just mentioned not for one moment method of creating a sinking tund ' with which to finally discharge debt. Scope of the Work, j We have one shareholder in China, j a number in New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Louisiana I and Texas, and, as to Virginia, Geor gia and the Carolinas, we have the woods full of them, so to speak. Every member of the association has just cause to feel proud of its record, and its present condition. It has passed its 27th anniversary, and the loss of a cent has never yet had to be chronicled. This speaks most p'ormrrtlv. it seems to me, of your board of directors, as they have come and sone and it also speaks well for you, its present stockholders, who have so liberallv manifested your con fidence bv your loyal support. Few of us fully realize how far- reaching are the beneficent results following the successful career, cov ering more than a quarter of a cen turv, of an association like this. When those of us who are share holders today have passed into the Great Unknown, there will be those following after, who will not fail to appreciate the opportunities afford ed.them by your banning down this goodly instrument for their own bet tenr.ent and that of their fellow men. The vouchers, securities and records have been carefully gone over by a very competent committee, consisting of Messrs. John R. Ross, W. R. Rob bertson and W..O. Gaffney, and their findings are herewith most respect fully submitted. E. L. KEESLER, Secretary and Treasurer. The attestation of the auditing com mittee is as follows: "We, the undersigned committee, appointed by the board of directors of the Mutual Building and Loan Asso ciation, of Charlotte, N. C, to examine the books and assets of said associa tion report tha we have done the same and find all accounts correct, ac cording to the statement of your secre tary and treasurer. "JOHN R. ROSS. This city is rapidly filling with delegates and visitors to tomorrow's republican state convention, which is to meet for the purpose of choosing the delegates-at-large to the national convention. The convention will consist of more than 1,100 delegates and will be the; largest state political convention everj held in Minnesota. In no state throughout the country have the LaFollette supporters been working harder than they have in Min nesota during the past few months. Headquarters have been maintained in this city and organizers have been busy in almost every county. Their active campaign has aroused a certain amount of sentiment in favor of the Wisconsin senator, but the recent coun ty conventions gave unmistakable evi dence that Secretary Taft is the choice of the majority of Minnesota republi cans for the presidential nomination. No other candidates besides Taft and LaFollette has received any attention in Minnesota. The Taft managers to day appear confident that the state convention will decide to instruct for the secretary of war. W. W. ("Pudge") Heff el finger, the former football star, will be one of the delegates-at-large. Those most prom inently mentioned for the other places on the delegation are Frank B. Kel logg, of St. Paul; E. B. Hawkins, of Duluth, and a fourth man representing the southern part of the state, prob ably W. P. Parsons, of Winona, or Frank W. Hunt, of Mankato. 0GW00D BLOSSOMS 4a I Builders Hardware AND ; Allen Carpenters Tools ardware Co. remind us that Spring is here. Last week the Thomasville Electric Light and Power Company started their plant to running and now the current is coming from their plant, they are furnishing an all night service, their lights are excellent and their service is very satisfactory. Meters are be ing installed wherever electricity is used and will be more satisfactory to both parties than the old flat rate. The new plant is sufficiently large to fur nish power for almost all the manufac turing plants in the town and it is learned that a mumber of plants will discard steam power and use electri city. With the object of discouraging cigarette smok ing, General Lord Grenfell, commander-in-chief of the forces in Ireland, has issued an order to permit pipes on ly to be smoked on such occasions as when the men are resting after field operations and manouvres. His order contains the following remarkable comment: "The commander of the forces has, during recent visits to military hos pitals, been again struck with the harm that the increasing prevalence of cigarette smoking is doing to the health of the army. It is not con fined to the army, and parliament is likely to soon deal with it as affecting the national health." 0 fi f I Before U Buy or Rent 4 FOR SALE 2 lots on N.
