PRAISES CHARLOTTE'S SCHOOLS. Mr. J- H. Chadbourr-e, of Wilming ton, Talks cf Good Work of Prof. Graham. Mr. J. II. Chadbomne, a promi nent citizen of Wilmington, who, as stated in yesterday's News, was the guest here of Mr. J. A. Fore, was yesterday taken cn an inspection tour of the public schools of the city by Sperindentent Alexander Graham. Mr. Chadbourn is chairman of one ot the important committees of Wil mington's system of graded schools and was greatly interested in what he saw in the Charlotte schools. Mr. Chadburn spoke in high praise of Charlotte's schools and Superin tendent Graham. He said that that the corps of teachers was a fine one, and in Su perintendent Graham the city had an able man. and that it was fortunate indeed for the schools that they were in charge of such a man. He stated that from his visit among the various grades that he observed that there was perfect control among the children and teachers, and he noted the willingness with which every order was obeyed showing great respect for their superintendent. Mr. Chadburn mentioned the fact that the schools were fortunate in the fact that the teachers were, for the most part, Charlotte-born and bred. He said that he was most favorably impressed wjth the meth ods of teaching employed. i He complimented the system of exits in the buildings, which would allow a quick emptying of the build- ings in case cf fire, me scnooi grounds also came in for a share of commendation and the North School was mentioned as the best he had ever seen." Mr. Chadburn said that Charlotte only needed a graded high school to make the school system perfect. These words of praise coming from a citizen of a city which also has good schools is a high compliment to the school system of Charlotte and to Prof. Graham. , .J. THE WEATHER 4. !jLH.I..H..H"I 'H' I"I"M"HI Forecast For Charlotte and Vicinity. Fair tonight. Wednesday, partly cloudy. State Forecasts. Washington, D. Lower temperatures prevail over the country east of the Mississippi this morning. Another area of low pressure apears over the Texas Panhandle, and has caused somewhat warmer weather in Texas, but as yet has been unaccom panied by precipitation. An area of high pressure is central over Washing ton, and has caused fair, cooler weath er over the north Pacific states and the northern plateau region. Indica tions are for fair weather in the vicin ity of Charlotte tonight and partly cloudy weather Wednesday. W. J. BENNETT, Observer. Kansas-Miscouri Debate. Lawrence, Kas., April 28. The an nual debate between representatives of the university of Kansas and the uni versity of Missouri takes place here this evening and is attracting much attention, owing to the old-time rival ry between the two institutions. The question is: "Resolved, That all elec tive state, district, county and muni cipal officers should be nominated by direct primaries held under state reg ulation." The Missouri debaters, upholding the negative, are D. A. Smith and Hen rv Elliot. The Kansas debaters are Frank E. Tyler and F. W. Brinkerhoff. GLENN TO SPEAK SUNDAY. Big Temperance Rally at the Audi torium The Speakers. Next Sunday afternoon at 4:3C o'clock in the new Auditorium there will be an immense crowd, no doubt, to hear Governor R. B. Glenn and Dr. Henry W. Battle on temperance. These gentlemen are considered the most eloquent orators in the state, and both have been active in the prohibition campaign. Dr. W. M. Kincaid will open the meeting with prayer after which Mayor T. S. Franklin will preside throughout the service. The Veterans' Choir will sing a few old religious songs. Solicitor Clarkson will make the announcements. BELMONT LOCALS. Some of those that so frantically raved because Mr. Craig voted for one republican twenty-four years ago, have overlooked the fact that they voted for one less than two years ago, in the person of Mr. Newell for the legis lature. The meetings at the M. E. Church continue with much interest. The ser mens of Rev. Mr. Brady are most ex cellent. The Craig followers, which are many are proud of the fact that the charges brought against him have been fully answered to the satisfaction of all. WTe hope that the "Forty thousand" that some one has said will be spent by one candidate for governor will reach the pockef3 of the laboring mar and help to make a full dinner pail. The saloon advocates nave dwindled down to a very few, and their head quarters on Pilgrim street and Doo little avenue present a forlorn appear ance. The few that are left are mourn ful that "licker ain't like it was ir their daddy's day." They say that Col. Ashley Horned got the "dough." Mrs. A. B. McKinnon continues quite unwell. Miss Corrinna O'Brien is still quite sick with tonsilitis. Hurrah for Craig, our next gover nor! Mrs. W. T. Robinson is critically ill at her home in Providence town ship.
