TO U, S. PRISON
... i.
Special to The News.
Greensboro, X. C. April 2S. Yester
day morning six prisoners who were
convicted at the recent term of the
United States court here and sentenced
by Judge Boyd to the United States
prion at Atlanta. Ga., were taken from
.the Guilford county jail to that place
to begin serving their sentences.
Those taken to Atlanta, with their
sentence, were as follows: W. K.
Freeman, of Montgomery county, one
vear and one day; Roy Lucas, also of
Montgomery, one year and one day;
.Tee '"Oateman. Smithtown, fifteen
months; John Hill, eighteen months;
Oscar Sisk, three years, and Jim Smith,
four years, all of Smithtown,- Stokes
county.
At Salisbury they picked up three
other prisoners, who were convicted
and sentenced to the Atlanta prison at
last week's term of the Federal court
in Statesville.
Representative men of the Christian
church of four states met with the
congregations of Christians for a three
days' session. Yirginia, North Caro
lina. Georgia and Alabama are all rep
resented. Mayor Li. J. Brandt deliver
ed an address of welcome in behalf
of the city, and Mr. C. A. Hines made
an excellent address of welcome in
behalf of the congregation of the
PViristioTl clllirch.
Mrs. C. D. Mclver and President j
j. I. Foust, of the State Normal nd J
Industrial College, returned yesterday
from Memphis, Tenn., where last week ;
thev attended the Conference For Ed-j
ucation in the South. Mrs. Mclver
made a most excellent address on ed
ucation. Other North Carolinians who
attended the conference were Presi
dent E. I.. Moffitt. of Elon College:
State Superintendent J. Y. Joyner,
and Assistant State Superintendent C.
II. Mebane am! W. L. Pot eat, of Wake
Forest College.
Sunday prohibition speeches were
made to large crowds by Mr. Edgar
Broadhurst at Zinz's Chapel: Ex-Judge
J. T. Shaw and Mr. W. A. Cook at
Sandv Ridae: and Mr. T. C. IToyle, at
Mount Pleasant. Judge Jeter C. Pritch
ard also made an excellent address
here on Saturday afternoon on prohi
bition. NEGROES TO DIE ON GALLOWS.
Brother iurderc Will Pay Penalty
for Brutal Crime Friday.
Ned and Brack Toland, the two ne
grose who were convicted at the spe
cial term of court in Lexington on
Tuesday cf-last week, will be hanged
next Friday. They are in the peniten
tiary, where they will remain until Fri
day' morning of next w eek, then to be
taken to Lexington by Sheriff Corley
and special deputies. The sentence of
the court if that they be hanged at
Lexington between the hour of
10 a.m. and 2 p. m., giving the sheriff
sufficient latitude so as to permit him
to take such precaution as he deems
wise in moving the prisoners from the
penitentiary to Lexington.
The mother of the Toland boys and
Ihe wife of Ned Toland came to Co
lumbia from Prosperity this week and
pleaded with Gov. Ansel to spare the
lives of the boys. They also called at
the penitentiary and saw Ned and
Brack. The mother was very much
wrought up over the thought of both
of her boys being hanged on the same
day and made a very pitiful plea that
they be spared the gallows. Gov. An
sel told the women that the boys had
been convicted of a dastardly murder
and were given an orderly trial. He
held out no encouragement to them
and it is not expected that he will
interfere with the sentence of the j
court. I
There had been some speculation as
to whether the prisoners would be giv
en military escort from Columbia to
Lexington on the date I for the hang
ing. This has not. been asked for by
Sheriff Corley and he does not expect
any trouble in executing the sentence
of the court. Feeling, very naturally,
was high against the boys shortly after
the commission of the crime, an 1
there was even some fear that the..'
would not be allowed trial, but. since
they have been sentenced and both
are to be legally hanged the people
of that section of Lexington county
where the crime was committed ap
pear to be satisfied.
Ned insists that ho killed Mrs. Elli
son single-handed and that his younger
brother is not to blame in the least.
Brack holds to Iho story be told on
the witness stand, but says ho is try
ing to "get right." Columbia State.

Catcliec Intervene.
Pcttsville, Pa., April 28. While a
trolley car containing IHO nassongevs
was crossing Harrison street bridge at
St. Clair the bridge collapsed.
The passengers screamed with terror
as they felt the car sink with the

in safety.
"No, my daughter," said the careful
mother firmly,-."you are too young to
go out with gentlemen." "But it isn't
