Jan. 2.5.—The cotton mar ket oi)ened steady at an adA’ance of 3 to 5 points and sold up to a net ad vance of G or T points ri.ght after the opening on steady cables, fore favor able trade advicf s from Bremen and the i'ailiire of yesterday’s meeting at Fall River to be followed by any an nouncement with reference to curtail- nient by domestic mills. Offerings increased on the advance to 15.08 for ^jay and during the middle of the morniui^ there was some irregularity but the undertone continued steady v.ith a faiily active trade. The census reojtrt on supply supply and distribution was given a bullish interpretation by some local traders, but failed to stimulate any fresh buy ing of consequence and the market dur ing the late forenoon was quiet with prices a shade off fi-om the best, but E-ready at a net advance of about 2 or 3 points. Spot (lUiet; middling ii])lands 1490 nominal. The market turned easier during the afternoon undei a renewal of local b^?ar pressure ajid rumors of a less ac tive spot demand following the increased business reported yesterday. 1 here also was s-ome scattering liqui- New York Stocks New York, .Tan. 25.—Gains were general at the opening of the market today. Six thousand shares of LT. S. Steel sold at 7S 1-4 to 78 3-8 as against last night’s closing price of 78. West ern Maryland, Southern Parivfic and Union Pacific advanced 3-8 each and most or the other active issues im proved fractionally. Several large bloc.iS of the New York city bonds sold at 101 to 101 i-{>. compared with yesterday's closing at 101 1-2. Toledo, St. Louis and Western pfd was the weak spot, declining 2 points. The market was unsettled in the early trading, alternately rising and falling on a fractional range. Opening gains were lost but there was a sub sequent rally led by IJ. S. Steel, which went to 78 3-4. American Smeltin.g and American Can, pfd., improved a point.
