The cap of state worn the king at the beginning of the proceedings will be represented in the oa«e of the queen by the golden circ let originally constructed for Mary of Modena. Queen consort of James II., at a cost of $650,000. It consists of a beautiful cap made of purple velvet and turned up with ermine, which is itself encircled with a wide band of diamonds together with a string ot pearls. The repeal of the inconsistent, if not ridiculous, Sunday blue laws by the new commissioners, whic.’i met the approval of 90 per cent of all classes seems to have been taken as a sign that Greensboro’s new government would let up on prosecuting lawbreak ers. There is no doubt about the iaci that quite a large element of ne\v sporting blood had begun to dump it self On the cit}'. The police have been ever on the alert to detect and appre hend criminals of all classes. Blind tigering has become pretty general in spite of the utmost vigilance. ^Finally, two detective, R. L. Lumsden, of Ral eigh, and P. M. McKeel, of Goldsboro, were secured several days ago, result ing in a wholesale arrest of several white men of more or less financial and social backing. Yesterday a bimch of them were tried and riot only con victed. but for the first time in the history of blind tiger prosecutions and punishment of white men. Years ago. w'hen the “Panhandle” railroad w’as in course of construc tion, its progress was a matter of great interest to the people of the region. A farmer who sold provisions to the contractors often reached the place where the men w'ere at work at meal time. He was greatly impress ed at their voracity. The work w'as nard and when the dinner beil rang every man made a d’sh for the table, and before any one could believe it possible the food had di"appeared. One day a workman on his way to the table tripped on the root of a tree and fell. He lay quite still, making no attempt to rise. The farmer rushed to him in great concern. “Are you badly hurt?’ “No,’’ answered the man. “Well, why don’t you cet up and go to your dinner?’ “No use,” returned the other, sadly.
