Aug. 10.—The news will be heard with a great deal of pleasure, especialy among the friends of Wake Forest College, that Fiank T:. ii ipson will have charge of the col lege athletics this coming session. There has been a general demand among the students and alumni for a change in athletic coaches and the officials have been looking around for a suitable man. The.v are very fortu nate indeed, to secure the services of Frank Thompson. He is an athletic, and well-know’n among the southern colleges. Since being at A. & M. Mr. Thompson has moulded the football and baseball teams into almost per fect m.achines. He instills into them that fighting spirit, to do or die, and every follower of college athletics in the south know well his success. His going to Wake Forest means a decided rise in stock for that school. With the material Wake Fore.-t b?s had the past few years, Mr. Thompson could turn out winning aggregation^, and next year will see the teams rep resenting "Old Gold and Black” strong contenders for championship honors. ♦ ♦ ♦ STANDING OF THE CLUBS ♦ ♦ ♦ AMERICAN LEAGUE. # Won. l«ost. The service at the church was conduct ed by the pastor. Rev. Dr. H. H. Hul- ten and Rev. S. F. Conrad, pastor of the North Charlotte Baptist church, and chaplain of Mecklenburg Camp Confederate Veterans. The service consisted of scriptural reading, prayer and hymns. “Lead Kindly Light” was sung with tender effect by Mrs. H. S. Mather, the soprano soloist of the choir. Dr. Hulten made a very fitting refer ence to the character of deceased, em phasizing his faithfulness to his church and duty and his influence for good in the community. As Mr. Mosteller was a Confederate A’eteran, entering the war as a mem ber of Co. D, Texas cavalry, the veter ans attended the funeral in a body. The Odd Fellows also attended in a body. The service at the grave was in charge of the Odd Fellows, and was particularly impressive. The deacons of the chudch acted n.s pallbearers.- Racing at Cleveland. By Associated Press. Griggs, of Texas, has his way the American Indian may fold up his tepee and march boldly into the councils of the Independent Order of Red Men. Mr. Griggs, who is a great sachem of the order, attended the great state council which closed a two days’ ses sion here yesterday. “Its a shamo,” said Mr. Griggs, “that the Indian at present cannot join the order. The I. O. R.
