Durham, Dec. 2.—Trinity College made Durham’s society this week, the Pi Kappa Alpha picnic at Southgate’s Cabin and the reception to the forty four declaJmers who came here to con test last night for the 1019 medal in declamation, being the two notable events of the week. The PI Kappa Alphas left here ThanksglTing morning in buggies for the drive of ten miles. Ideal weather over head characterized the day and in Durham county it doesn’t make any difference whether one can travel on the overhead pavement or not. The roads are macadamized all the way and the rural trip is delightful. The annual Thanksgiving picnic la now the big event of the fall for the fraternities. The boys send‘ a caterer up on the train and prepare the meats in Durham. They relieve the girls of the burden of preparing a basket and employ the few hours in ways that are manifold for the good time. The sage of the Cabin, Mr. James H. Southgate, was present on this occasion, the last one in which he will figure this fall as he returns to Durham to live half the year, the winter months making the mountain top cold for one of his warmth. After each one had written her Thanksgiving sentiment in this book, an interesting program folowed. A lively flower contest was then en joyed, and, Mrs. W. H. Graddock was found to be the winner of the prize—a book. Refreshments con sisting of chicken salad, olives, waf ers and coffee w'ere served by Mrs. Shell, assisted by Miss Emma P. Carr. Bost. • • • The reception to the declaimers last night was a big thing in which the fac ulty of the college and the high school, the contestants, the members' of the 1019, the scholarship organization un der whose auspices the contest was given and by which society and medal for the money was raised, and a few friends were the invited guests. _ Dr. W. I. Cranford, of the depart ment of philosophy, was toastmaster and among the men called upon for ad dresses were those who took part in the declaiming and the several most interested men in the society. This is to be an annual occasion. The first year was last year and there were thir- ty-two schoc^a represented. Three states sent men here to make a bid for the beautiful medal. North and South Carolina and Virginia. The social feature was a big one in the visit and the stimul^p to society work was great.
