(..V CHA5fBe stetfr.- JANUARY 191912 . 12 V: i j Special to The News. Statesville, Jan. 19. CapL A. J. I Dougherty, of the United States army, !vrho has recently been detailed as inspector-instructor for North Carolina, ;has been with the local military com pany, the Iredell Blues, the past three days. Hi3 principal work is to in struct the officers and non-commision-ed officers in the new drill regulations iof 1911 and inspect the military quar ter?, rtr. The new regulations are ! more simple than the old and the offi cers of the Bines are very much pleas ed with the instructions given by Supt. , Dougherty. . CapL Dougherty has only recently returned to America from Cuba, where he was stationed with the United States troops two years. Speaking of the present troubles in Cuba which have caused the United States to threaten intervention, he said that in case the United States should find it necessary to take up arms against the Cubans the task of subduing them would be a greater one than most people realize. The Cubans are well organized and their army is equipped with all the latest improved army rifles, machine guns, etc., and it is be UaVed that they could place 40,000 to 30,000 well drilled soldiers in the field f tn a few hours notice. The Cubans fight principally from ambush and so well do they know the location of the bis cane brakes of the island that it is glmost impossible to oust them when they once get entrenched among the canes. And they are a people who fisht unto death. At their regular annual meeting "Wednesday the stockholders of the Statesville Loan & Trust Company re elected the following board of direc tors: W. D. Turner. C. M. Steel, E. Morrison. N. B. Mills, H. A. Yount, W. F. Hall. M. K. Steele and D. M. Aus ley Mr. Steele was re-elected presi dent, Mr. Morrison vice president, Mr. Ausley secretary and treasurer, G. E. Hughey, assistant secretary and treas urer, W. E. Webb manager insurance department. The January term of Iredell Superior Court will convene Monday with Judge O. H. Allen on the bench. Both criminal and civil dockets are unu sually light and there i3 no great amount of work for the court. About ten prisoners are in Jail awaiting trial. The most important case is that of Walter Russell, the young white man who will be tried for the murder of June Summers in north Iredell a few months ago. Russell will plead self defense. The officers hope to nave the -cases against Cleve McBride, the no torious blockader, settled at thi3 term. The cases have been continued from term to term until the officers now have little hope of McBride receiving his just deserts. It is claimed by the officers that a number of cases have been continued from term to term without just cause, at the instance of attorneys for the defendants,- until they literally died out. Basket Ball League -Clubs' Standing STANDING. Teams G. P. Yv L, P. C. A's "3 3 0 .1000 Y's 3 2 1 .667 Cs 3 1 2 .333 li'3 3 0 3 ,000 Above is the standing in the basket ijall league of the Y. M. C. The first game will be called at -8:15, the admission being 10 cents. The representative five are getting fnto the test possible shape for Mon day night's game with Davidson. The two teams will line up as they did in their last game, and such being the case a "battle royal" is expected. Davidson will be in better shape for the coming game than they were for the last one. They will line up with White and McDuffie forwards, Carson center, Howell and Sprunt guards. The local quintet is also in "tip-top" Ehape. Stewart and Allison are going at a clip now that is hard to beat. Averett at center is finding himself, and Page and Ross at guards never fail to score several times and keep their man from scoring. The boys' orchestra will be on hand to make the evening a more enjoyable one. Death and Burial Mr. J. H. Helms Mr. J. H. Helms died Wednesday evening at his home 811 North Brevard street at 7:30 o'clock. He served as a brave soldier in the Confederate war. He was born and reared in Lincoln county. Lyon, now presiding at the su perior court, making the American Trust Company commissioner and trustee of the real estate holdings of Mr. H. C. Dotger, wife and children, the holdings consisting of the fine 89- acre Dotger farm on the Monroe road near Elizabeth College. The prop erty has hitherto been in the hands of the Fidelity Trust company, of New Jersey, executor of the estate of the late Andrew J. Dotger, father of Mr. H. C. Dotger. The transaction of any business with the Fidelity Trust com pany was necessarily attended by great inconvenience, by reason of its long distance from here. Henca the trans ferring of the office of executor to the local company. Teh property, since Mr. Dotger's residence upon it, has been developed into perhaps the most valuable trucking and garden farm about the city, an estimate of its value being $1,000 per acre. It is pene trated by the Rapird Transit car line and lies just beyond Elizabeth College. The property will be divided into attractive building lots and placed upon the market and there is little doubt that there will be a great de mand for building sites from it at once. That fastest growing, most attractive part of Charlotte. These lots are on Polk Ave., with cement sidewalks, running to Elizabeth Ave.; Each is 50x157 feet to rear alley, has city water and the proximity to the proposed new graded school, Elizabeth College and electric cars makes them very desirable for home' sites. The present price of these lots is $550.00 each and a cash payment of $100 will secure your choice. Balance on easy terms. rown V2 PHONE 535., 203 N. TRYON ST.
