BALOWIP ES The report of President J. A. Bald win of the Southern Industrial Institute made this week to the board of direc tors of that institution, Is a very in teresting one as showing not only the present flourishing condition of the in stitute but also its bright prospects for the future. The directors were very much gratified at the condition of af fairs in the institution and are exceed ingly hopeful as to its future. The report of President Baldwin's report, in part, follows:- "I am very glad to report that we are having the most satisfactory year in our history, ninety-seven boarding students have been enrolled since the opening In September; sixty-one boys and thirty-six girls. There have been 258 day pupils, making a total enrol ment of 355. Thirty-two have worked a week and gone to school a week, thus paying all their expenses by work. ! "The 'week about' plan has been very Interesting. Some of ' the boys work on the farm, some by the kind ly co-operation of the Hoskins Mill work in the mill, and the girls do the house and laundry work of the school. The students themselves are very much pleased with the system. I think-, without a single exception. There are several things in its favor. "1. The work of the students ' is remunerative in a way that is impos sible when they work onl ytwo or three hours a day. It is, therefore, possible for a great many to come this way who otherwise could not. "2. They learn- by doing the best v:ay to learn. "3. It keeps students tied to the only work they can do, unless and un til they show especial aptitude and desire for some other. The mistake is thus avoided of . unfitting young people by education for the only thing they can do, and- failure to train them for the only thing they can and ought to do. "4. It suits especially youns people who have had but few educational aa vantases. Such students, whose minds are dulled by lack of training, are apt to become discouraged at their seem ingly slow week ends they are some times discouraged at their seemingly slnw nrnsress in their books. The next week the manual work tones them up and they are anxious when tne time comes to get back to their dooks. -The renort "of the farm is unfor tunately not so good. The severe drought of last summer very seriously afforteH rmr rrnns. But it could have hurt us much worse than it did but for the fact that we have been doing deep plowing and getting at the same time more vegetable matter in tne lanu uur irir tht Inst ffiw vears. . "I am particularly glad that we have gotten the problems 01 tne scauui &u worked out, and the faculty so devel oped that I can be away a considerable ot-- rf ho time without hurt to the school. .This gives me an opportunity to see after the financial neeas 01 me work as I have not been able to do be fnro Tt enables me also 'to do quite a good deal of extension work in the cotton mill comunities 01 tne jarouua,&. nnrinir TAPTit months Mr. Schlichter, nr Tractor and mvself have' given a number of stereoptlcon lectures, ana a much larger number will be given aur iT,t, -tviia vpr. Snecial attention will be given to encouraging the making of pretty flower yards ana vegeta uie o-orna in mill communities." Mr. A. J. Draper, who nas ior some time held the place of cnairman 01 tne finance committee -of the board of di raptnrE was made vice-president of the board, but also remains on the finance committee. IK REPORT 1 O s ARCHITECTS. OOP QQJ Q CHARLOTTE LADY'S LEAP YEAR BID TO CONCORD'S Special to The News. Concord, N. C, Feb. 8. If Concord doesn't soon have a "Mayoress" no one will be to blame but C. B. Wagon er. For in this good leap year Con cord's handsome bachelor mayor has been granted the privilege of joining the Benedicts. The invitation was ex tended to him in a letter which he has Just received and comes from -a per son who is in a position to safely con duct him into that realm, the person being none otner than a Charlotte young lady. The letter contained a proposal and also a description of the kind of silk dress she. would desire should the mayor refuse to succumb to her charms. The following is the descrip tion of the dress as given in the let ter: - "Sky blue preferred. Size 48. Length of skirt 42. Waist 40.' "She must be some hefty girl to have a 40-inch waist," was the only comment the mayor would offer on the epistle. INDIAN KILLED ON TRACK. ! Near Rochellfc', 111., an Indian went to sleep on a railroad .track and was killed by the fast express.' He paid for his carelessness with his life. Oft en it's that way when people neglect coughs and colds. Don't risk your life when" prompt use of Dr. King's New Discovery will cure them and so pre vent a dangerous throat or lung trou ble. "It completely cured me, in a' short time, -of . a terrible cough that followed a severe attack of Grip," writes J. R. Watts, Floydada, Tex., "and. I regained 15 pounds in weight that I had lost." The dis trict convention of the Knights- of Py thias will be held In Reck Hill on Thursday, February 15th, and the lo cal Pythians are making preparations for the annua banquet which. will be given in honor of the 250 delegates who will attend the sessions of the convention. The business meetings will be given in - held during the day in Masonic hall and at night in Fried heim's hall the banquet will take place. Following the banquet toasts will be responded to by grand officers- of the lodge and several prominent Pythians of the district. . Among those who will be in attend ance will be Grand Chancellor Myers, of Charleston, and Grand Keeper of Records and Seal Brown, of Abbe ville. The district deputy is S. G. Moore of Rock Hill. Dr. W. G. Stevens is deputy grand chancellor. Basket Ball Season Neat Its Close The basket ball season in Charlotte is fast drawing to a close. But two games remain to be played in the two Y. M. C. A. leagues, and two of these will .be played Saturday, night in the gymnasium. In the senior tourna ment the C's play the M's, and the M's .will endeavor to win at least one game this season by taking the com ing game. The other game will be be tween the Y. M. C. A. and CVH.-.S., and this game will decide as to whether the Y. M. C. A. boys have a chance for the championship. The manager of the representative team will try to schedule one more game for the team: Word was receiv ed from the University yesterday that it was impossible for them to come, so Davidson will be invited to play the third game with the local quintet. Da vidson and Charlotte have each a hard fought victory to their credit, and if the third game comes off, it would be the hardest kind of a proposition to pick the winner. Comer d Club Tomorrow Night There will be an important meeting of the Camera Club of the Boy's De partment of the Y. M. C. A. on Friday night at 8:30 o'clock at -which the prize winners in the January contest will be announced. As Mr. Franklin is out of the city Mrs. Franklin has judged the pictures and will act as critic at the meeting on Friday night. Every member of the club should be present as the criticisms will be of inestimable value to those who wish, to make "pictures" and not re main the ordinary "snap-shot fiend." WENT AFTER, CHRISTIAN , CHINAMAN WITH KNIFE Atlanta, Feb. 8. Because a Chris tian Chinaman named Jum Leed re fused to do his laundry on Sunday, Lewis Mitchell, a negro went after the chink with a, carving knife. A running fight ensued, th Chinaman escaping. The negro was bound over. TO THE PUBLIC. An Item which appeared in a Char lotte newspaper, today has been con strued by many to indicate that I was going out of business, on account of embarrassments arising from a con tract which I had for hauling the pipe to be used in extending the city wrater mains to Catawba river. This impres sion is erroneous, as my abandoning this work was due to differences be tween myself and the contractor in charge of the work and not because of my being involved in financial difficul ties of any kind. The horses that I will sell next Saturday are animals which have Deen used on my river contract work and not a part of the equipment of my storage, and trans-i fer bsuiness, which am .conducting at 23 East Sixth street and to which I s-hal give additional time-and: attention in the future.
