Cob-wb Club Convenes. When the slides showing the Char lotte that is to be had displayed the curtain rose revealing the headquar Zrtot the ancient and restful organi sation the Cob-web Club. The walls were adorned with such conservative tnottoes as "Back to The kod Old Days." "Down with Kuester," "More md Larger Cemeteries," "Down with Industries," "No Admittance to New comers. Etc had for ita moto the tearing down of Charlotte and that he wns on his way to get a policeman to slop it. The lift ing of the' curtain showed tho Cob web organization in enthusiastic ses sion. The president of the club, A Knocker, alias. David Ovens) made a ringing speech in which he urged the membership to increased vigilance against the pernicious boosting "activ ities" now fo rampant in our midst and due in no email measure to the ceaseless devices of one Kuester. His sentiments, were eagerly echoed by other lumbers of tho club in cluding I. C. Dimly, the vice president (alias Robert Glasgow!, who argued most pleasibly and with rare eloquence against allowing 'a lot of foreigners, whose pedigree we know nothing about, come here and wear ut our streets. I tell you, im agin' it." The samo speaker was very much "agin"' the bringing of a lot of conventions here, "which imposes so much on the hospitality of our ho tels and never amount to nothin' no how." Another speaker stressed tho dang er of bringing new railroads here, the caption of his address reading. "Down with Railroads." He pointed out with great force iind convincing argument the danger of "that new fanglod thing they call a Mi'oway" and pointed out that the coming or a railroad always meant the coming of "a lot. of new people and that's what's the matter with this town now; thre are entirely too many people here." A third speaker delivered and elo quen address on " I he Kvils of Ad vertising." which ho said was- the main cause of new industries coming here, and he aided, amid great ap plause fro mt ho other members ot the dab. "I tell you, brethren, this in dustry business will be - the ruina tion of us yet: why first thing you know these here loosters will be given away the Jordan corner for a factory site. And the worst of it is industries create competition; and 1 want to warn you in time my friends, if this competition keeps up. will ac tually have to work for our living. Another member was making a vigorous and well received talk on iho "Dangers of Inlerurban Devel opment" when Mr. Clarence O. Kues ter walked in the college street en trance of the auditorium with Tolice man Walter Orr. "I had a hard time finding that policeman but 1 found him and i mean to break up that Cob Weh Club." Hearing this announce ment and seeing the brass-buttoned officer the Cob-Web Club made a hasty exit from the stage. Membership Campaign Launched. Mr. W. S. Iee a shining example of the usefulness of new citizens who came from other places 'and who is president ot the Greater Charlotte Club" before Mr. Kuester's election to that place, was Introduced and reviewed the history of the Greater Charlotte Club and pointed out the usefulness of such an ' organization. He suggested that the Southern Rail road shops now located at Spencer and forming in themselves a consid erable town, might have been se cured for Charlotte had there been a norganization such as the Greater Charlotte Club to make united effort in that dirpeiinn. The hie Cone Mills at Greensboro might also have been ui .i Life lh, uiri v atBj, lie uvwaic:uf ii right Influence had been brought to n bear. As a further striking and con- ff crete example cf the possibility or doing big things for the city with the right kind of effort, Mr. Lee pointel out that two years, when Mr. Claude G. Creighten began to attend railroad meetings and to in dulge in talk of bringing the Norfolk jj Southern to Charlotte, no one thought r jt J seriously the road's actually coming.' but the realization of that dream almost with us. Mr. Kuester made a characteristic exnorranon in innse nresenr inr co operation and harmony and doing sua greater tnmgs ior tne city ana stated the. plan for increasing the membership to one thousand in the two days campaign now on. He made reference to a fact which he baa of ten stated before that the men who give more of their time to the work of the club and the up-building of the city in everyway were the busiest men in the city.
