the cmmom news, fbbruaky ib 1912 10 Senator Simmons Replies To Speech Gov.- Kitchin Of Itatement of Senator Simmon After Reading Report of "Mr. Kltchln'a Speech. T hai brsrd that Governor Kit chin in hi tpccch at Raleigh last nteht would charge that I had voted with Aldrich on the Tavne-Aldrich tariff bill: that I voted for subsidies, and that I was un democratic and reactionary. Supposing that this would be the line of his attack, as I see from the News and Observer it was. there was mailed lo the North Carolina rapers last night Rn answer to these anticipated criti cisms, and I hope these papers will give me the same space in its publica tion as I see the News and Observer gives Mr. Kitchin. Mr. Kitchin's labored effort to show an inconsistency in my position on lumber and wheat, as stated in my Snow Hill speech in 1002 and in my speeches on those subjects in 190S and 1010. wns fully answered by me in th-sc latter speeches. In 1002 wp manufactured practically only hish grade lumber such as Cana da does not produce at. all. and there was practically no competition between the two countries in the sale of this prticle. In 100$ we had largely used up our his;h grade lumber, and between HO and SO per cent of the lumber we were then and are now producing is almost identical in grade with that of Canada, and in the only market, we have for this low grade lumber Canada has a freight rate advantage over us of $1.50. " In 1002 a duty on wheat, as I stated in my Snow Hill speech, would net have affected the price of wheat in this countrv anv more than a duty on cot ton would now affect the price of cot ton because we were then enormous vrt0r! nf whfat. In 1010 it was thown to the finance committee, by crovernment statistics and testimony, that we had practically ceased to be m 'exporter of wheat, except what is -nown as macaroni wheat a grade of wheat not consumed in this coun trv. This difference is trade conditions In these two periods makes all the dif ference in the world in the affect of n. trtfc .iiioc nn the article involv- ed, as everybody who knows anything about this subject knows. ( Air Kitchin says that on roll cau; I voted 10 times against the majority! and there was applause. Mr. Kitchin ; 3id not tell his audience that he was referring to the 43 roll calls during the , r.vtra session of congress. Mr. Kitcn-j in is mistaken in his figures. I hae In mv hand now Senate Document No. 275 being a compilation of all the rec ord' votes taken during the extra ses sion That shows that I voted on 4o :oll calls with the republican major tv onlv 11 times and against the re publican majority C2 times, and that 1 voted fewer times with the republican riMi-inf that session than any other democratic senator, excepting, rmlv three. It also shows that Senator J Wiiliams. on S5 roll calls, voted with ho republican majority 24 umeo nu that Senator Bacon on 43 of these roll calls, voted with the republican ma jority 2S times. Mr. Kitchin says that I voted against reciprocity, and that reciprocity provi ded for reduced duties on farming im plements, barbed wire fencing, etc.. but Mr. Kitchin did not tell his audience that this treaty provided for a reduc tion in duties on these articles of farm consumption only when imported from Canada, and that Canada makes no farming implements or barbed wire for export. Now did he tell his audience, what Is a fact, tfrat the farmers free list bill, lor which I voted, not only reduced but removed all duties upon farming im plements, barbed wire, bagging and ties, etc., imported into this country From anywhere else in the world, and that upon the floor of the senate I re- ratpri1v stated that T would vote for the reciprocity bill if this free list bill : was added to it. ny way or amendment, ?o that the president could not veto the one without the other; nor did he tell his audience that while I voted against President Taffs reciprocity treaty, which Senator La. Follette, a Btrong tariff reformer, has character ized as a bill against the farmers and In the interest of the trusts, I voted for all of the democratic tariff bills which passed the house and came to the senate during that session of con gress. On reciprocity I voted with the insurgent republicans and against a majority of the etandpat republicans and of my party it being a republi can administration measure. Mr. Kitchin says I am undemocratic. Oh, well, he and some of his friends In 190S charged that one of his oppo nents for governor in that year was undemocratic because he had voted for a republican twenty odd years before. I do not care to say anything more about this matter at this time except .that the governor seems to have been oblivious to the fact that in reading me out of the democratic party because iof my lumber vote he is reading out every democratic congressman from ;North Carolina in the 60th congress ex cept his brother as well as a largo majority of the democratic senators in that congress, including my colleague, and that in reading me out of the party because of my vote on reciprocity he is also reading out Congressmen Webb, jGudger and Doughton. T hornpson Gave Inleiesting Talk The meeting for boys at the Young Men's Christian Association 'yester day afternoon was one of the most enjoyed and largest attended of the series between sixty and seventy boy beingpresent. Mr. Walter Thompson of the Jack son Training School at Concord, spoke most interestingly on the "Wayward Boy." Following the example of the churches of the city, a chance was given the boys to help relieve the suffering in China, and an offering or $3.30 was taken, which will support a lamily, or rather keep alive a family for more than a month. The presence of the full boy's orchestra added much to the interest of the service. Orchestra.
