It would seem as though the fash ions of the days of 1S30 or 1860 were about to dawn asain, for these silks repeat the designs favored for calico j when he sets riled. A remark Pete JV,lt!rV1S"atei;Ial?r bt,h f Whi(;h!made to Umpire Jack Egan in a qUCteci. Fine fl - ower designs closely printed are dominant at present. The back grounds are indistinct, but the color effect is mot decided, even though a multiple of colors are embodied in i , T Tnere a.e quaint blues rather remi- niscent of the Chinese blue color of old porcelains: lovely, indescribable browns within whose varied shades nestle little squares and circles and smali flat flower shapes, each one in- troduced in contrasting colors, but pre- serving a most artistic color harmony as a whole. In one color and white effects, par ticnlailv in the hlim and whitp nl- mllnct oil ilia. rlacJono ova n-nnmntv!inl " &cull.Cwxv0i and Vniform in arrangement. It is only where flower torms are used at u' kaleidoscopic alliance.of color results. Snauhaig silks are heavy enough to drape well, but the ioulards are in . . . .. verv- eel tain StVle position, The rivalri for popjular favor will be craped wools and silks. These may be printed in colorful designs or may only oe produced in sGiid color et- fects. For cottou the prospects is exceed- ingly pleasing. White materials will occupy a great deal of attention. Gowns made of white materials, particularly the sheer cottons and linens, will be replete with most exquisite trimmings features and be emphasized by elaborate embroid- eries, much tucking and a great deal of lace and embroidery insertion and flouncing. "What makes an Englishman wear a monocle?" "Well," replied Plate Pete, "I have been told that diplomacy is something like a poker game. Pete Compton, formerly an out fielder with the St. Louis Browns, is one of those good-natured Texans who takes life easy, but is dangerous i ii' ill i f f i i i 1 1 i si v t- , i i it? ri'ii mii Pete had been warming the bench at the time, and was doing the coaching in an attempt to earn his salary. A play came up at the plate. Pete failed to agree with the decision, and came up from third to so express himself, although he was in no posi tion to see just what had happened at the plate. Had not the runner missed the plate four or five inches he would have been safe, as he was touched late, but Pete did not know this. Egan listened to Pete's ravings for a while, then informed him that un less he hastened back to the coaching ! lines at first, his check would be minus a hnTirlTVr! when natr rlav Trlltir? around. Egan was kidding, but the idea of losing $100 in real money brought Pete back to earth. Looking Egan squarely in the eye, he ans wered: "In Texas they kill people for doing less than that." "Remember you are now in Michi gan,", replied Egan, "but I don't think I need fear your gun if you shoot as well as you see plays." Pete resumed coaching and the fine of $100 was called off.
