THE CAROUHA JOUUiAl. WMhiesdaf, Deccmker 15. Pace Fow South 21 Curb Sorvioo “Your Family Dripf-ln^ Forty-Niners Take First Two Conferenee Games CwUnued From Page One thinks about winning. And it fretty much sums up the beliefs of all of the Forty- Niners who played the type of ball befitting any defending conference champion seeking to retake its title. The stars were numbered by all the fingers on one hand as Coach Harvey Murphy’s im proved youngsters hustled their opponents out of their own gym nasiums. Against St. Andrews much of the story was 6-3 freshman ace Wasson New YDC Head Three new officers were elec ted at the December 8 meeting of the Young Democratic Club and the newly drawn up constitution went into effect. Lee Wasson was elected presi dent; Leonard Horton, first vice- president; and Gary Allen, sec ond vice-president. Jo Le Fran cois was re-elected secretary and Bettye Trapps was retained as treasurer. Hugh Horsley was appointed parlimentarian. Wlasson said he was planning a programming committee to in crease the club’s participation in campus activities. The committee would be responsible for bringing speakers to the University. Jerry Lawrence who popped in a cool 36 points enroute to three team records—most points scored, most field goals attempt ed (32), and most field goals made (15,) tied with Ronnie Robinson. In an attempt to explain his feat, the most outstanding scorer in the history of the school said, “Well, I had the shots, so I took them.’’ He didn’t mention that he made them also, but the score- hook did, a systemized offering of numbers which also pointed out that, Wally McGinty had 17 points and 14 rebounds; Greg Canady, 14 points and 11 rebounds; Robbie Snipes, 9 points; and Anthony 8 points, 13 rebounds and more blocked shots than the Knights would care to reminise about. What the post game statistics weren’t able to point out, how ever, was perhaps the most impressive factor of the success ful road trip. It was the defen sive handiwork of Canady and Snipes, the clearing of the oppo sition’s offensive boards by An thony and McGinty that told the tale. Also, there was improved shooting, as the 49ers topped 45 per cent each night in field goal accuracy. The Coliegf- of Charleston game was prerty much the same story, with UNC-C lump ing off to an early lead and clinging to it as the game proceeded. Canady followed with second straight outstanding offensive performance at 15 points. McGinty and Snipes had 13 each and Anthony 9 to account for the 72 total. Again the 49ers’ defensive alignment with the guards pressing out front and the inside men playing a zone underneath worked to perfec tion. When the ball did come inside, Anthony and McGinty slapped a surprisingly high number of shots, out of the appointed trajectory. Murphy, upon surveying the weekend masterpiece, said, “It was a case of our boys outclass ing some other teams, whereas before it was we wbo were outclassed. “I’m not going to make any predictions as to whether we’ll win the title again, but I will say that if we continue to play this type of aggressive ball, our chances are better than I thought they might have been after we lost our first five games.’’ The Forty-Niners will seek their first home win tonight at 8 p.m. when they play Asheville Biltmore at Garinger’s gym. 3 BROS, tavern! j I I Dancing Nightly I j RESERVATIONS: 596-9985 | i TtutFMDN* 537-2964 *• I r I c I T Y CHEVROLET CO.
