Jerry Anthony, Robbie Snipes, and F.ddie Goodall fouled out and Defense, Rebounds Damage The Forty-Niners received their sixth straight defeat in a fast moving 78-66 game with N.C. Methodist College on Wednesday night, December 7. According to Jerry Anthony, high scorer forthe night with 18 points, the team’s main problems were in defense and rebounding. At the end of the first half the Forty-Niners trailed by only four points with a score of 42-38, how ever, during the first two minutes of the second half, they began to fall behind and continued to trail the Monarchs by almost ten points for the remainder of the game. With three minutes left to play the score stood at 73-61, but both teams fought hard and man aged to score five points each. Two of the Forty-Niners’ final points were scored when Bill Red mond was awarded two tree throws with only twenty seconds left in the game. This left only Bobby Lem monds and Lane Hurley on the floor lor Charlotte at the game’s end since Gordon Barrett’s wrenched knee prevented him from suiting up tor the game. The game was nip-and-tuck in the first half with St. Andrews pulling into a 31 to 28 lead at the midway break. The Laurin burg boys built a 9-point lead in the second half on the shooting of Guy Starling and Ken McGinnis. Starling and McGinnis finished with 19 points each. With four minutes left in the contest, fouls had decimated the Charlotte active crew to four pl ayers. The I'orty-Niners played four-on-five for the next three minutes and 15 seconds and act ually whittled a 16 point St. An drews cushion down to nine. With 45 seconds remaining. Bill Redmond collected his fifth per sonal, leaving just three. Then, with two seconds to go, Don Keel said the magic words to one of the officials and he was immed iately removed from the game. That’s when Bobby Lemmonds and Lane Hurley, the two remain ing I'orty - Niners amazed the crowd by getting a lightning - fast bucket before the buzzer. Lem monds fired a football - type in bounds pass the full length of the court to Hurley underneath the net and he stuffed it. “The crowd lost aU its cook ies when we did that,’’ said Bob. Commenting on the game Bobby said, “We cut their leadevenafter they had us four on five. When we got down to three players, they froze the ball and we had to foul to get it back. It sort of shook them that we could score on them with only three players.’’ In addition to the more than 30 personal fouls called against Charlotte, two technicals also ch arged to the squad.
