Charlotte Thinclads Shock Strong St. Andrews
BY JOHN LAFFERTY
The ■ track team completed in
its first conference meet Monday,
March 27, against St. Andrews in
Laurenburg.
St. Andrews, which finished sec
ond by one point in the 1966
DIAC tournament, defeated the
Forty-Niners 74 to 32, but was
shocked by some of the opposi
tion they met.
The Forty-Niners took three
first places to the Knights’ thir
teen. Maurice McClettie opened
with a 19’ 11 1/2” leap in the
broad jump. Larry McAfee came
from 15 yards behind in the 880
yard run to beat one of the top
runners in the conference, and
finished 2:03.4, one tenth of a
second off of the DIAC record.
The mile relay team, in the last
even of the meet pulled an upset
victory over the record holding,
and 1966 championship team with
a time of 3:40.8. Woody Frick
opened, ran even with his man,
and handed off to McClettie who
feU behind, but regained his lost
distance before passing the baton
to Larry McMee.
McAfee gave the Charlotte its
first narrow lead, and handed off
to John Lafferty, who held the lead,
and finished two second ahead of
St. Andrews.
Charlotte added five second
place finishes. Ben Basinger led
with a 5 ft. 6 inch high jump.
Lafferty had a 5:00 mile, Mike
Ridge had a 10:57 two mile, and
Harold Cohen placed second in both
the 120 yd. high and 330 yd. low
hurdles. In the 330 yd. lows, he
missed first only by four tenths
of one second, because of a stum
ble on the final hurdle.
Harold Pulley added two thirds,
one with a 33 ft. 4 3/4 inch shot
put and the other in the discuss
Charlotte runners Ben Chavis (third from left) and Maurice Mc
Clettie (fourth from left) stay with the more experienced St. An
drews men. Pictures by Journal photographer Frank Coley.
wia a ftrow of 94 ft. 9 inches. ‘‘Even if we took a first, for boys around the team might gain
ccordmg to Coach Steels, five points, St. Andrews was as- more depth, and score higher,
arlotte was badly hurt by two sured of a second and third, for
events it was unable to enter, and a total of four points,” he said. definitely looking for-
by the fact that the team lacks to our meet April 6 at St.
depth.
He felt that by switching some Andrews,” Coach added.

Netmen Knuckle Under Twice
Show ‘Good Bit Of Improvement’
BY DONNA HUGHES
The Forty-Niner netmen recei
ved two losses during the Easter
blidays, falling 9-0 to both SL
Andrews College and College of
Charleston. Both were Dixie Con-
terence matches.
“I can readily understand why
St. Andrews is first in the con
ference,” said Coach William
Walker. “They have a lot of depth
and are experienced because they
have already played several mat
ches tills season.”
The team showed a “good bit
if improvement” in the match witli
College of Charleston, he said,
‘especially due to the efforts of
ipencer Edwards who played well
or us.”
There have been several last
minute additions to the underman-
led tennis sguad, including Joe
Wilson and Ronnie Payne.
1 really expect a lot from
Ronnie,” Wallver explained, “be
cause he works hard and has a lot
of ability and hustle,”
The fuzzballers’ next match will
be April 7 with Pembroke.
Freshman George Lloyd is one of the tennis
players who is showing marked improvement.

Experienced Maroons Maraud
Outmanned Forty-Niner Duffers
BY PAUL BOSWELL
The St, Andrews golf team liand-
ed the Foitf-Niners a 19 1/2 to
1 1/2 loss Friday in a DIAC
match at Cedarwood Golf Course.
The Maroon’s returning letter-
men proved to much for the Forty-
Niners who have only 2 returnees
on the squad.
The golfers were beaten by what
Rick Holt called, “ A real good
and experienced golf team.” They
are currently leading the confer
ence standings.
Mike Thomas, John McQuay,
Sam Rankin, and Frank Hallman
were all blanked by their men in
the match.
Rick Holt picked up a point
in his match by bettering his man
on the back nine. Dave Cotter
rounded out the Charlotte scoring
by tying his opponent on the back.
Commented Captain Dave Cot
ter, who had a 79 to lead the
team, “we need four men who can
break 80.”
Interested golfers are urged to
contact Dave Cotter or Rick Holt.
Added David, “We’re hurting
for 70 shooters,”
