Notes From
The Sidelines
By John Lofferty
WANTED:
Cheerleaders, must be male or female, exude
optimism and spirit for the 49ers, possess a
voice which carries, preferably loudly, and
have a bouncing leap. Also, the Pep club could
use some bolstering if it is to serve as an
effective backdrop to these comely lasses and
their male counterparts.
And about that Pep band? Great!! So if you
play an instrument come on out.
INCIDENTALY. . .
How come the cheerleaders support only one
sport? It must be admitted that Basketball is
our number one spectator sport, and cheering
would be destracting on a golf course, or a
bowling alley, but surely some method of
recognition could be established for the “non
spectator” phases of the athletic program.
SPOTLIGHTING
This week the Carolina Journal Spotlights
Larry McAfee. A junior chemistry major, from
Charlotte, Larry holds the DIAC conference
record in the 880 yard run, with a 2:01.1,
set May 1st in the Conferance track meet,
and jointly holds three school relay records.
Larry lettered this spring in track, and ran
cross country briefly last fall. He has been
working out all summer, and should be in top
shape for this cross country season.
The Journal salutes Larry for his past and
future performances, his ability to generate
enthusiasm among teammates, and his true
49er spirit.
Athletic Staff Grows
The cross country meet at St. Andrews, on
Sept. 22, opens the 1967-1968 49er sports sea
son. And it appears that it will be a banner
year for the department of Athletics. It also
appears that it will be a year of new faces
and new ideas at UNC-C.
The spirit of newness can be seen in the
addition of two members of the athletic
oepartment, and also two new programs. Mr.
Bestian will take charge of the development
of a program of intermurals, while Mr. Fleming
will build a wrestling team.
Both new programs are exciting. Intermurals
between campus clubs, classes, or mearly be
tween randomly chosen teams will add a great
deal to the spirit which should prevail on
campus. Hopefully it will give participants a
feeling of unity with the school.
Wrestling, of course is the schools seventh
intercollegiate sport. A sport requiring dedi
cated practice, strength, agility, and a quick
mind, none can top it as a thrilling spec
tator sport.
With these new coaches, and untried programs,
a host of fresh faces should round out this
young, new 49er image. Few members will
return from last years teams, which were
themselves understaffed. The field is wide open
for untried talent.
Several more novelties will be offered in
the sports field this year. The athletic field,
with a track is nearing completion. Grass has
grown, and is beginning to thicken, and accord
ing to rumor, the track should be cut and
cindered within two weeks.
This cross country season brings the first
home athletic events to be held on campus.
Meets are scheduled on the 49er course Oct
ober 19 and 23.
It appears that this is the year for a fresh
look forward, and a new optimism forthe49ers.
It is an exciting time to be a part of this
expansion.
Dr. Harvey Murphy recently an
nounced the addition of two new
members to his staff. They are
Mr. Larry C. Bostian, who will
teach physical education and build
a program of intramural sports,
and Mr. Paul Fleming, who will
also teach in the Physycal Educa
tion department, as well as build
a wrestling program,andcoachthe
golf team.
Mr. Bostian is a graduate of
North Carolina State, and has com
pleted work on his Masters degree.
He is now taking courses towards
his Docterate at the University
of Virginia.
He has been at Lousiana State
University for the past fouryears,
where he directed for two years the
required PE program.
His plans for the year begin with
the orginization of inramural foot
ball, with clubs and classes as
the basis for team division. From
here he will work in the direction
of the greatest interest.
Mr. Fleming, a Cincinnati
native, received both his under
graduate and masters degree at
the University of Cincinnati. While
a student he played basebaU, and
wrestled.
For tour years he taught and
coached in the Cincinnati pubUc
school system, before retumingto
the University of Cincinnati to
finish his Masters. While working
on his Masters he served as head
wrestling coach and assistant
Dasebail coach.
Immediate plans caU for the
beginning of Wrestling practice on
November first, or as soon as
the wrestling mat arrives.
Field and Track
Near Completion
UNC-C’s first on campus
athletic facilities, a track and
field, are nearing completion.
The field, located in the valley
below the Union, has a grass
covering now, and should be ready
for Intermural use soon.
The track is scheduled to be cut,
and have the cinders laid in the
next two weeks. There is some ur
gency about its completion,
because two home cross country
meets are scheduled, the first
coming on October 19, with
Greensboro College.
Both track and field will be
used this spring for track prac
tice and meets.
Be A 49’er

Cross Country Outlook: Bright!
The vigorous and expansive
growth of the Charlotte branch of
the University of North Carolina
gives us the symbol of the 49er.
Always thrusting ahead, cour-
agous, individualistic, adventur-
some, and striving always for suc
cess. This is the 49er.
You are challenged to show that
these traits are yours. Do scane-
thing today. Be a 49er.
Formal workouts for the 1967
49er cross country team began last
Monday, Sept 11.
With both letfermen returning
from last years squad, plus added
members with valuable experi
ence, the team members have an
optimistic outlook for the season,
which opens September 22 at St
Andrews College, in Laurinburg,
N. C. Dr. Harvey Murphy, coach
of this years harriers, stated that
he felt very good about the teams
chances.
Returning from last years squad
are John Lafferfy, a junior, maj
oring in history, who finished sev
enth in the conference, and Mike
Ridge, a sophomore, majoring in
history, who placed eighteenth last
fall. Larry McAfee, a junior chem
istry major, ran at the end of
the season, but never got into
shape. McAfee holds the DIAC re
cord in the 880, and has run cross
country in high school.
New Members are Woody Frick,
a junior history major, with high
school experience, and a UNC-C
tracli letter, John Byrd, a fresh
man in the English department,
who placed fifth in the state for
Garinger last fall. Bill Lynch, a
junior in the chemistry depart
ment, who has no experience, but
a real desire to run for the
team, and Fred Culp, a senior,
also lacking experience but full of
spirit. These six have been run
ning on their own all summer,
and hope the extra time will give
them and edge which last years
squad lacked.
Several other runners have
worked with the team during the
simimer, and it is hoped that they
will add depth. Great hopes also
rest on added membership
throughout the season, drawn from
new students.
