of Pete Donahue, Charlotte held
a 46-33 half time lead, which they
ran to a 96-80 victory, in the
game played at Greensboro.
Bob Lemmond, and Anthony led
the first half, with 13 points each,
whUe Gary Cress and Pete Dona

wards’ 13, and Charles Cole’s
12 kept the Spartans alive in the
first period.
Charlotte ran away with the
second half, as Jerry Anthony
teamed up with Donahue for 33
points. Had not Coach Murphy
pulled his starting 5 the differ
ence would have been far greater
than the score indicated.
It was Pete Donahue who spark
ed this, the finest effort of the
young 49ers. As described by one

Spotlighting
Jerry Anthony scored 30 points
for the 49’ers in a winning effort
over UNC-G, and added to a long
list of basketball achievements
garnered since enrolling at UNC-
C. This is the third year of var
sity experience, forthe 6’3” junior
who hales originally from Pitts
burg, Penn., but has lived in Char
lotte for 10 years.
According to Jerry, he has been
playing basketball since he was 8,
with experience coming in Jr. higl
school. He was, however, too short
to play for Myers Park, his high
school alma mater. In his Fresh
man year, he gained the extra
height, and was soon a 49er regu
lar. He was one of two starters
which remained eligible after the
now infamous mid-term exam
period, three years ago.
In 1966-67 he was elected co
captain of the team, and was hav
ing one of his top years until a
broken cheek bone forced him to
sit out half of the season.
His 30 points, on January 3rd
was not his high. When he was
a freshman, he once scored 31
against Asheville-Biltmore. But
he is best known as a top de
fensive star for the 49’ers.
And his immediate wishes. “I
hope we can start playing better,
more like a team.”
Jerry Anthony, one of the 49ers
top assets.
49’er Wrestling Team Travels To Wesleyan
The 49’ers young, small, but
hardworking wrestling team was
scheduled to travel to N. C.
Wesleyan for their first DIAC
match, Monday, Jan. 8. Terry
Eudy, Mike Anderson, and David
Sells are looking toward their
debut optimistically.
The only actual scrimmaging
they have had, has been against
the Davidson Wilcats, who they
work out with each Wednesday
afternoon. Coach Paul Flemming
commented that the team had been
scoring against their more ex
perienced Southern Conference
opponents and had been holding

Only the match results will
tell. The 49’ers can’t win with
their few members, but indivi
dually, they can shine.

UNC-C 46 50 96
Greensboro 33 47 80
Charlotte’s 49ers found the going
rough, as they lost tour straight
games to close out the season
before Christmas. On December
9th they traveled to Laurinburg
to take on the Knights ot St.
Andrews.
Again the struggling 49ers found
their defense inadequate, as the
Knights out-scored them in both
halves, to grab an 84-69 victory.
Led by John Turner with 27,
followed by Craig Hannas with
14, and Greg Gredlein with 13,
St. Andrews showed little hos
pitality to Charlotte, playing its
first game in the Knights’ newly
completed gym.
For our team. Bob Lemmond
paced the first half with 11, and
the game with 19. Ben Basinger
scored 10 of his 12 points be
fore the break, while Robbie
Snipes held Charlotte in the game
by scoring all 12 ot his points
in the last half. Jerry Anthony
added another dozen points, and
pulled down 8 rebounds tor the
49er effort.
Charlotte played hosttoGreens-
boro College on December 15, in
a game played at Harrisburg Gym.
Gery Cress’ 10, and Bob Lem
mond’s 9 points led the 49ers
in the first half, but they still
found themselves on the short
end of a 27-37 half time split.
Robbie Snipes and Jerry An
thony came on strong, with 11
points apiece in the second half,
and the host team pulled within
3 points of Greensboro but fell
as far behind as 20. Despite their
erratic performance, the oppon
ents were evenlymatchedthrough-
out the last half. Neither team
was able to sustain an offensive
drive. The final margin was 74-
64, Greensboro. Bob Lemmond
was the game’s high scorer, with
16 points.
On December 16, the 49ers tra
veled to Savannah, Ga., to face
Armstrong College. Trailing by
10 at the half, UNC-C fell apart
in the second period, when Arm
strong, led by Tatum’s 30, hit
for 52 points, and finished the
game with a 93 to 68 edge.
Gery Cress led the 49ers with
20 points, Charlotte’s only player
in double figures. For the Pi
rates, Hattrich grabbed 19, Simms
16, and Aycock and Burke had
13 each to lead scoring.
Charlotte closed out its pre-
Christmas season on Tuesday,
December 19, against VVashingt-
ton and Lee University, at Garin-
ger High School. With Basinger
scoring 10, and Cress 7, to carry
the scoring load in the first half,
the 49ers tell to a 23-38 half
time disadvantage.
The second halt went better for
Charlotte, when Basinger added
another 10, to finish as high man.
Cress added 11 more, and Lem
mond hit tor ten points before
fouling out. Never-the-less W&L
held its lead, paced by Cartwright’s
24 points, and Neer’s 20.
The final margin was 85-65,
Washington and Lee.
