Page 2 The Carolina Journal Wednesday, April 10, 1968 Barry Goldwater On Campus April 17, Tickets Disappearing Barry Goldwater 1964 Republican presidential candidate and former senator from Arizona Barry Goldwater will lecture here on April 17, Wednesday, in the Union Cafe teria at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the lecture are $.75 lor students, faculty, and administration and $2.00 for the general public. Barry Goldwater served in the United States Senate from, 1953 until 1964. He was the senior Re publican on the Labor and Pub lic Welfare Committee and a member of the Armed Services Committee and its key Prepared ness Subcommittee, which over sees the Nation’s armed might. BSU Presents Dr. Schweitzer From U. of Tennessee Dr. George K. Schweitzer, pro fessor of chemistry at the Un iversity of Tennessee, will speak on campus at 11:45 a.m. on Wed nesday, April 10 in C-122. His topic will be “Scientific Faith and Christian Knowledge.” His visit here is sponsored by the Baptist Student Union. Dr. Schweitzer, a native of Poplar Bluff, Missouri is at present at the University of Tenn essee. His duties include teach ing and directing research in the fields of inorganic and nuclear chemistry both on the main cam pus and at the Oak Ridge divi sion of the University. Professor Schweitzer received a BJV. in chemistry from Cen tra 1 College, an M3, in geo chemistry from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in religion from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from New York University, and an Sc.D. for work in the history of sci ence from Central College. He is author of over 80 papers in organic and nuclear chemistry, a textbook on radioactivity, a book on the doctorate, numerous papers in the interesting spheres of science, philosophy, and re ligion, and is contributor of es says to a number of books. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, The American Chemical Society, The American ■ Philosophical Associationandthe History of Science Society. He has acted as scientific consultant for the Atomic Energy Commis sion, Monsanto, Proctor and He also served three terms as chairman of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee —and received the unanimous acclaim of his colleagues upon relinquishing this key post. Mr. Goldwater is a World W'ar n veteran who flew cargo across the “Hump” from India to China. Now an officer in the Air Force Reserve, he has logged over 8,000 hours of flying time in jet and conventional aircraft. Bom in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 1, 1909, Goldwater at tended public schools in Phoenix and Staunton Military Academy in Virginia. He entered the Un iversity of Arizona but left school on the death of his father to become the head of the family. He began working at Gold- water’s Department Store as a junior clerk. At the age of 27, he became general manager and thereafter initiated a 5-day work week and provided liberal life Insurance, hospital and surgical policies for employees. Barry Goldwater began his po litical career in 1949 when he was elected to the City Council of Phoenix on a “reform” ticket. In a startling upset, Barry Goldwater won. He easily won re- election in 1958. He is one of the most widely read men in America as the author of three best-selling books, the latest of which is Where I Stand. For four years he wrote, a political column car ried in 200 newspapers from coa st to coast. He met Mrs. Goldwater, the former Margaret Johnson of Muncie, Ind., in 1932 and two years later they were married in Muncie. They have four chil dren, and four grandchildren.
