Alan Bates Shines
in Film Version Of
Malamnd’s Fixer
Cruheshov and Count Odoevsky visit Yakov in his prison cell- from THE FIXER
Very Interesting, But Weird
“The Fixer” is the emotionally
stirring story of the persecution of
a Russian-Jewish peasant falsely
accused of the brutal ritual
murder of a young Christian boy.
Yakov Bok, the Jewish peasant,
portrayed by Alan Bates, refuses
to confess to the crime and as
Bates commented on Bok, “it is
only at the end that he knows
(who he is) and he doesn’t care
whether he lives or dies, as long as
it’s truthful.” Yakov Bok
unwittingly becomes an
international symbol of the
suffering victim of ignorance,
prejudice, and man’s inhumanity.
Actress for her role in “A Patch of
Blue.”
The Pulitzer Prize winning
novel, THE FIXER, by Bernard
Malamud was adopted for the
screen by screenwriter, Dalton
Trumbo. The movie was produced
and directed by Edward Lewis
and John Frankinheimer. “The
Fixer” opens March 7 at the
Visulite Theater.
Facts About “The Fixer”
Elizabeth Hartman received
SIOOO per day overtime while
waiting for snow to shoot her
final scene.
In her first scene in her first
movie, Georgia Brown tripped
over the camera.
First American film to have
costumes loaned by the Russian
govern ment.
A record number of British
Actors (23) in an American film,
(an American Film?)
No accents used in film since
Frankenheimer believes the
English accent is universally
known and accepted.
Dirk Bogarde’s part, which
took 13 days to film, was
stretched over three months time.
Dirk had the only Rolls-Royce in
Hungary.
Western crew/staff consisted
of: 5 Americans, 6 French 5
English and 1 Italian (An
American film?)
Four special photographers
covered the bedroom scenes with
Elizabeth Hartman and Alan
Bates.
Alan Bates caught cold while
doing nude scene.
Cast and Western crew evicted
from palatial Gellert Hotel in
early December to make way for
Economic Meeting of the
communist Countries, which had
taken over the hotel.
Edward Lewis, the producer,
once ran a furniture factory in
Philadelphia, Pa.
Although the story takes place in
Russia more than fifty years ago,
its theme is applicable to today,
and one should almost feel a
responsibility to see the movie.
Two dogs were given special
permission to come into the
country: Sigmund Troll Von
Ritchoffen, a German Shepherd
who belongs to John
Frankenheimer and Dalton
Trumbo’s French Poodle,
Beep-bo.
Among the actors and actresses
in “The Fixer,” are four reknown
Shakespearean actors-Alan Bates,
William Hutt, Ian Holm, and
David Warner. Dirk Bogard,
portraying Bok’s counselor and,
seemingly, only hope, is the
winner of two British Academy
Awards. Also appearing is
Elizabeth Hartman who won
national acclaim and a nomination
for an academy award as Best
Alan Bates has recieved a
nomination for an Academy
Award for his demand role as
Yakov Bok. His outstanding
performance takes the viewer
through the suffering
metamorphosis of a persecuted
and humiliated man. With tht
combination of an excellent script
by Trunbo and a stirring
performance by Bates, the viewer
is accutely aware of the poignance
of such lines as Bok’s “I am what
I am-but-I am a man who,
although not much, is still much
more than nothing.” and Bok
again, “Where there’s no fight for
it, there’s no freedom.” And
Finally, “THE NAME IS YAKOV
BOK. A JEW. AN INNOCENT
MAN ALSO YOUR
BROTHER.”

Black Demands Are A Reaction, Not A Solution
On Monday, February 24 the
black students of UNC-C
presented a proposed constitution
of a black student union and the
following statement to the
Student Legislature:
We the Black studentsat
U,N.C.-C. have deem it necessary
to form a Black Student Union to
voice, express, and relate the will
of Black people on campus and in
the Black community as well. We
deem this necessary because we as
Black students intend to combat
the institutionalized racist
educational system at U.N.C.-C.
which affects Black people on
campus and in the Black
community. Therefore we
demand that the university and
the student legislature
immediately recognize the Black
Student Union as an official
campus organization.
The normal procedure for
handling any constitution is that
it be brought to the Judicial
Committee, which in turn brings
the constitution to the
Legislature. After receipt of
constitution from the committee
the constitution is tabled until the
next S.L. meeting which allows
the legislators an opportunity to
read the constitution before
approval or disapproval of the
document is granted. Wlien the
black student constitution was
not brought up as they demanded
they left the legislature meeting.
The chief contention of the
legislature was and is that it
should not be forced by any
group to change or alter those
procedures which are considered
beneficial. The black student did
not understand this reply and felt
that it was solely directed at their
demand.
The nest phase of the black

student unrest came when 10
demands were presented to the
Vice-Chancellor Bonnie Cone. The
demands are as follows:
I. WE DEMAND an education
that relates the Black student to
his true history where the
educational requirements are
changed to include a Black
Studies Program to be controlled
by Black students and staff by
Black faculty.
II. WE DEMAND that at this
state supported institution that
the Black student population be
increased and maintained at the
percentage of Black people in the
state of North Carolina.
III. WE DEMAND that Black
faculty members and Black
administrators be employed by
the university immediately.
IV. WE DEMAND that
non-academic employees receive a
minimum of $2.00 an hour for a
40-hour week and that all
overtime receive time and a half.
V. WE DEMAND the
extinction of the present grading
system in the academic evaluation
of Black students; we demand the
employment of pass-fail grading
system for Black students in all
courses and we demand the
availability of tutors for courses,
when needed by Black students.
VI. WE DEMAND that the
academic achievement of Black
students in high school be the
only bases for admission to the
university.
VII. WE DEMAND that the
administration publicly denounce
Governor Scott’s “Police State”
policy toward state supported
schools.
VIII. WE DEMAND that all
racist members of the faculty and
administration be dismissed
immediately.
IX. WE DEMAND that the
university acknowledge in writing
that the Black Student Union has
the power to deterroine the
destinies of Black students.
X. WE DEMAND immediate
response from the administration
since that the DEADLINE for
ALL 1- DEMANDS to be met is
Monday March 3, 1969.
The first demand is basically
sound because it is a request that
the total picture of history be
taught. Yet the demand fails to
make clear two major points,
First, the funds are not available
to allow specific areas of studies
that are needed. Students, faculty,
and administrators are concerned
that sufficient funds are not
available for many needed
programs. Second, the black
students demand for control of
the black studies program and
staffed by a black faculty
over-emphasizes the difference
between diverse parts of out
campus, that is white and black.
The second demand agaii
overemphasizes the racial issue of
black and white. The black man is
totally failing to truly make
himself a part of this university,
or any university, when the ratio
or percentage of black to white is
the reason for his acceptance at i
school. The same would be true of
whites who would make a similtc
request. In either case using the
percentage basis for the granting

If botli blacks and whites would keep tlie four steps above
in mind, then perhaps we can get some where on this campus.
VVe, at THE JOURNAL, have occasionally been accused of
slanting news and making black seem white, white seem
black. There’s not a person of the staff who would spare any
expense to make all seem to be an undistinguishable gray - all
alike, all equal.
