Taylor Chosen Dave Taylor has been chosen as Player of the Week. In addition to his two touchdowns,Taylor stopped one AKPsi drive with an interception on his own four-yard hne and saved another touchdown by breaking up a pass in the end zone. Honorable Mention goes to Thurman Willis. WiUis caught a game-tying touchdown pass with 48 seconds left in the game. The reception allowed PKPhi to go into sudden death play and defeat the Outhouse. In addition to his TD reception, Willis continually made catches to keep PKPhi in the game. SPORTS lumber 19,1969 THE CAROLINA JOURNAL Page 8 Taylor Led APO Defeats AKPsi Harriers Finish Second In Meet Dave Taylor scored two touchdowns to lead APO “Lovers” past AKPsi for their fifth straight win. From the opening kickoff, it was all APO with their offense and defense completely dominating the game. George Lloyd scored first for APO on a 30 yard pass from Doug Whitley. Lloyd made the reception between two AKPsi defenders and stepped into the end zone. The PAT was unsuccessful. The APO defense contained AKPsi’s offensive efforts and forced them to punt several times. Dave Taylor scored his first touchdown on a short down-and-out pass. Taylor beat his man by several steps, received the ball and then outraced the defenders 40 yards to the endzone. The point after was no good and APO held a 12-0 lead. The APO front line, anchored by Jerry Hammond iong with Mark Hardison, Bobby Wright, Doug Kietzman and Joey Howell, completely stifled AKPsi for the remainder of the half. APO kept their momentum going and came out strong in the second half. The “Lovers” got their third score on a two pass play. It started with a short pass from Whitley to Mike Wade, with Wade shpping past two defenders and then hitting Larry Haulsee for the score. The point after was again unsuccessful and APO led 18-0. Behind the blocking wall of Mark Hardison, Joey Howell and rookie Harold Hood, the APO offense continued to control the ball. Dave Taylor got his second touchdown on a right end sweep from his own 40 yard line. With beautiful broken field running and great downfield blocking, he went the 60 yards untouched. From there on it was only a matter of time, and APO successfully waited it out to take a 24-0 win from the businessmen. MIKE RIDGE, UNC-C finished second in the conference meet held at Methodist College on November 8. The UNC-C Harriers placed four men in the top ten finishers. Runners wearing the UNC-C brand finished fourth, fifth, seventh, tenth, and eleventh. Dan Dickenson, a Freshman, M# r. senior harrier. finished fourth in the conference and has been chosen as All Conference. The Harriers finished the seacons with a 7-2 conference record and a 7-8 overall record. Prospects for next year look good because the entire team, with the execption of senior Mike Ridge, will return. Old Timers Turn Back Engineers APO Wins Tug-o-Wor .. . P . W' ■' >»#■ Behind their bone-crushing sweeps and hard defensive rushes, the Old Timers stomped the Engineers for their fifth straight win without a loss. Wasting little time, the Old Timers rolled their offense down the field on well-executed sweeps to either side. With strong downfield blocking, John Short thundered in for the first Old Timer score. The PAT was no good. Daryle Robinson came up with a seemingly impossible catch to give the Old Timers their second score. The PAT pass from Larry Hoopaugh to Joe Turner was unsuccessful and the Old Timers held a 12-0 lead. The Engineers cut the lead to five points on a pass from Danny Babock to Alpha Peace to Eddie Frias. Babcock ran the point after the halftime score was 12-7 in favor of the Old Timers. Larry Hoopaugh opened the second half scoring for the Old Timers on a 20 yard run. Joe Turner caught Hoopaugh’s pass for the PAT and a 19-7 lead. Joe Turner made a fantastic catch of a Hoopaugh pass to give the Old Timers an insurance margin. Turner caught the ball on the goal line and fell into the end zone for the score. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful. Time was on the Old Timers’ side, and it expired with the Old Timers out in front 25-7. Pi Kappa Phi Shuts Outhouse Door Unfortunately for th* Outhouse, there are 40 minutes a game - not 36. For the first 3 minutes of the game, Outhous^ played ball control on offe.n^' ana defensively they shackled tn^ PKPhi offense. The result was > 6-0 Outhouse lead going into tW final four minutes. Car Rally Hot Rod White and “Steamboat” Stewart, captured a victory in the Recreatio" Committee’s Rally last Saturday- ^ White was driving his ‘69 Mach 1> and Stewart was the navigator. The Rally started with 23 cat* and lasted two and a half hours- Bob Welch, then Recreatioj' Committee Chairman, later said> “The next rally is sure to P* bigger and better, and anyon® participating is in for some fun.” 4iPI 1% ■■ Ji- APO captured the Tug-O-War Winnir^g^ crown last Wednesday by defeating all teams entered in the competition. AKPsi finished second, losing only to APO. the Tug-O-War enabled APO to move ahead in the overall team competition standings with a total of 165 points.
