Them — This Time
Though there have been many disagreements about the literary
magazine in the past, hopefully that is all behind us. Humphrey
Cummings has been appointed editor of the magazine by the Board of
Student Publications. From all appearances, he is going to do a really
fine job--if he gets the support that he needs.
It is important that there be a magazine of the arts on campus.
Traditionally, a university is a place in which the arts flourish. From all
indications this campus is no exception. There are many talented
people here who should have some vehicle by which to demonstrate
this talent. It would be sad to loose it by default.
We think that it is important that there be a student run magazine of
this type. There is talk that the creative writing classes would like to
publish a magazine of their own. This is fine, surely there is enough
talent to publish two magazines on this campus. The insertion of
material in one magazine would in no way preclude another of the
writer’s or the artist’s work being included in the other magazine.
Cummings is very sincere in his desire to publish a magazine of
exceptional quality. He is re-vamping the entire structure from the
re-writing of the constitution right on up. So, if you would like to see
us have a magazine of this type, why don’t you drop by Union B-6
some day and get in on it from the beginning?

Pollution Particles.... A Forty-Niner I had the other day in the
Cafeteria had a LEAF in it. Explanation? A bay leaf to flavor the chili.
Aren’t you supposed to REMOVE bay leafs before you serve it, at least
that’s what the Galloping Gormet does. Ride on SAGA!....
Incidental Intelligence, Campus Division.... It appears the Blevins
case isn’t dead yet at UNCC. Watch for action by some campus groups
on this and the SGA to hassle over money to the defense fund.... In the
works is a purported plan to have Charlotte Ambulance Service run by
the Chamber of Commerce in their spare time.
Triple Threats.... the ever-increasing flow of student opinion is
directly in corollation to the decreasing validity of the arguments
expounded by most of them. Comments tend to be the product of
emotional irrationality and irrelevant poppycock, instead of deliberate,
constructive thought. Here can be fount! (by the Establishment) strong
reason to ignore most campus dissent. A triple-threat army of fact,
evidence, and analysis-rationally professed with an inherent
understanding of the fallibility of man-will yield better results. Blatant
dissenting rhetoric, unsupported by evidence, and be willing to accept
the idea that you probably will influence only a few, not the world. But
it’s a start.
Civil Rights Department, Judicial Division.... Did you notice it’s
illegal to picket the residence of a U.S. judge? Guess who lobbied to get
that law passed. Right, the judges. Good ole Uncle Sam looks after nis
own, don't he?
Graffiti.... Our underground dictionary lists potted plant as a
marijuana-smoking narcotics agent.... While offering prodigious praise
of the JOURNAL’S campaign to clean up UNCC’s trashy campus, an
unidentified supporter stood calmly in the doorway, flicking cigarette
ashes casually on the floor.

Now, futuristic fantasies from the news, here’s Danno.... UNCC,
2070.... Dedication ceremonies were held today for the recently
completed Belk Tower. However, problems arose quickly when the
crowds swarmed to the tables to buy the commemorative T-shirts,
bail-point pens, ash trays, etc., which were reduced for quick sale to
only $11.98 each. A spokesman from Belk Services commented, “This
surpasses our opening day sales at SouthPark in 1970....” and he

Black Pride — A Sham

/ am white and proud of it. White to
me means purity, truth, and general
goodness. White is right.
Whites throughout history have led
other races in most any virtue you wish
to name. White has always been the race
of the leaders. The conquerors
throughout history have been members of
the white race.
Everybody knows that all the great
inventors have been white.
Blacks can’t even claim one President
of the United States that has come from
their ranks.
The Blacks, for a very long time, were
even reduced to slavery under the wiser,
more industrious, more advanced white
race. I challenge anyone to name on black
king of England, or one great black
writer.
Sure, some Blacks have been able to
publish, but where were they educated;
In white universities, by white professors.
The White intellect (we will have to
assume) rubbed off.
They are incapable of self-government,
which is one of the most obvious virtues
of the white race. Look at the trouble
brewing in Africa now.
This is why I am proud to be white.
And now Blacks have come up with the
idea of Black pride. Jez! Can you think of
anything more ridiculous? If being white
is something that one can be proud of, as
it clearly is, than how can anyone
possibly be proud of the fact that he is
the color artists have always used to
depict ignorance, filth, evil, death, aiui
general badness.
I suppose you would brand this the
philogophy of a racist. Well, all I can say
is to look at the facts. The facts happen
to point out that the white race IS
superior. That the black race has
accomplished so little and whatever it has
accomplished, it has been under the
guidance of condescending Whites.
Black pride? I just can’t see what
Black’s have to be proud of, besides the
fact that they are causing all kinds of
trouble for the United States. They want
this; they want that. Hell, if they want it
so badly why don’t they go out and work
for it like white people do? I guess
they’re just too lazy. And now they talk
about Black pride! Wow.
Accomplishment and personal are me
key words. Without accomplishment-
-personal accompUshment-there can be
no pride.
Shame: the personal feeling one gets
after having accomplished something of
negative worth, or failed to accomplish
something of positive worth.
The two words—pride and shame-are
frequently misused and that misuse seems
to be the base of the black pride
movement. ,
The primary question is “What is there
to be proud of in having black skin?”
The above italicized portion is, 1
believe, as valid an argument against black
pride as any argument can be for black
pride. It is ridiculous.
To daim that being black in itself i*
something to be proud of is as ridiculous
as to claim that being white in itself is
something to be proud of.
In neither case has anything
worthwhile or not been accomplished.
One can not be proud of having
received a gift. He can be happy a^ut it,
or sad; he can enjoy it or be miserable
with it. But there is no basis for pride-or
shame. He accomplished nothing-neithei
by himself or as a member of a group. He
simply received.
And that’s the only thing a perwn has
to do with the color of his skin. He
receives. He accomplishes nothing. H®
doesn’t earn it or deserve it. He merely
comes out that way. Black or white,
what’s to be proud of?
One more argument that need*
exploring: The black pride advocate
claims that he is proud of his heritagfi
proud of his people, and proud of their
accomplishments. ,
Again the question of ^rsona*
accomplishment comes to mind. How can
a person feel pride, of the personal
variety, in a heritage he was given, or feel
pride in the accomplishments of others.
And how can he claim to be a member of
distinct “people” with the singl®
This by way of introduction.
Black pride is an up and coming
addition to the general “movement.”
“Movement” being synonymous with
liberal and its ensuing “ism.”
Equality-for-races, liberation-of-students-
from-academic-bondage,
hell-no-I-won’t-go, peace, feed-the-poor,
and d o w n - w i t h - p o 1 lu t lo n.
Organizationally, black pride belongs
under the equality-for-races section.
It’s one I can’t swallow, however. What
possible sense of pride can come from
having black skin?
To properly analyze the black pride
theory, we must define it as to common
us^e, as well as its opposite- shame.
Pride: the personal feeling one gets
after having accomplished something
worthwhile. Proud of a shinny sports car.
Proud of good grades. Proud of having
earned an Olympic medal. Proud of
winning a tournament. Or after a person
has had part in accomplishing something.
Proud of winning a basketball game.
Proud of your company’s success. Proud
of a university’s accomplishments. Proud
of your son’s accomplishments.

In The Heat Of The Night
TIGER! TIGER! Buring Bright! Little
did Soul Phi Soul know what was to
happen to them on that dark and
gruesome night. Rah, Rah, Rah, Soul Phi
Soul! Beat 'Tiger Now, Da Da Da Da Da
Charge Da DA DA DA Charge. We got the
fever. We are hot, and we can’t be
stopped. These were the sounds that were
heard at the Derita Gym on the Night of
the Ti^er. As the ball went up for the first
time, it was clear that it was going to be a
rough game. However, it was not clear
that the Gig was on Soul Phi Soul. Having
beaten TIGER during preseason 39-9,
Soul Phi Soul did not expect any trouble
from Tiger; and they had no right to. But,
alas, poor people fate saw otherwise.
Alter 10 minutes it was clear that
TIGER had something other than looks
and ability going for them. They had a
student referee. In an effort to call a
game fairly. Coach Kerr was hampered by
this liability. Was TIGER at fault? I
suggest not. Therefore TIGER can not be
condemned because they were not aware
of what was going on. By the number of
jump balls that were called. Soul Phi Soul
was lucky to get the ball past half court;
and as a result of this, TIGER led at
halftime 10-6. The second half went a lot
like the first and when the buzzer
distinguishing factor being race?
It is as ridiculous as me saying that I
am proud of being white because George
Wasnington was white. „
Or proud of the white “people
because they have accomplished so much-
In relation to what, have the white
“people” accomplished much? ,
Pride’s counterpart shame can be u^
the same way. If a person can feel pride
in race, then he should also be able to fee*

because a member of my race murder^
John Kennedy? Should I feel shame **>
being white because 400 years ago white*
enslaved blacks? Should blacks feel shawe

race were sunk to the lowest form o*
social existance?
And of heritage: % Should Willie Brandt
feel shame in the fact that his parent*
were not legally married? He didn’t have
mudi say. How can he feel shame?
Black pride grew out of the blatf
shame movement (sit at the back of the
bus and honky cops and dogs ana
Wallace). And buck pride is as ridiculous
as black shame. Or white pride or white
shame. Neither word belongs.

Because of the nature of the game and
the way that it was taken from Soul Phi
Soul, it was hard to congratulate TIGER-
Therefore, we choose not to. In the heat
of the night many things were said which
some people don’t consider necessary-
but which were appropriate at the time.
Therefore, if I said anvthing that
offended anyone I would like to
apologize but stranger things have
happened in the heat of the night.
♦STAR SPANGLED BANNER AWARD*
I would like to give this week *
patriotic award to someone who really
deserves it. I don’t know whether he*
prejudiced or whether he just can’t
referee, but I believe that its *
combination of both. Therefore I win
bestow on the student referee at the
TIGER-SOUL PHI SOUL game on
February 12 this coveted award.
