The UNCC golf team competed
in its first and only fall
tournament two weeks ago and
finished a respectable fourth in a
six team event.
Coach Floyd Kerr was a little
disappointed that the team didn’t
finish any higher than fourth, but
was pleased with many aspects of
the tournament.
“We finished fourth, but we
finished behind three real fine golf
teams,” explained Kerr. (The
teams in order of finish were
Furman, Appalachian, Wofford,
UNCC, Presbyterian UNC-Ash.).
“Appalachian was sixth in the
nation last year in the NAIA, and
they have everybody back this
year. I think Furman has won the
Southern Conference title for the
past two years, so that shows they
have a strong team.
“The tournament showed me a
lot. I feel like by the time spring
rolls around, we can play with any
of those teams. We’ve got a lot of
potential and the team picked up
a lot of experience in this
tournament.”
Competing in the tournament
for the 49ers, and the score they
had for the 36 hole event, were
Terry Mauney (73-78-151, good
for third place), Danny Randell
(80-78), Gary Moore (87-78),
Chuck Little (83,85), Pat
Whisnant (83-86) and Terry
Owen, (81,86).
“The course played extremely
hard,” said Kerr. “The wind was a
factor both days, and both the
fairways and the greens were hard.
All of the team totals were fairly
high.
“I was especially pleased with
the play of Randell. He’s come a
long way since last year. I played
five sophomores and one
freshman, so we shouldn’t be in
too bad a shape by the time spring
gets here.”
The UNCC cross country team
held its first meet of the year
Friday, under very unusual
circumstances; only four guys ran
for the 49ers. “We have six guys
out for the team, but two of them
are injured,” explained Coach
Harvey Murphy. “You are allowed
to have seven runners in the meet
and they count the five top
finishers from the team. So we are
starting with a disadvantage.”
The six runners out for the
team are Tom Anderson, Ed Frias,
Mike Drye, Jim Griffin, Roy
Chesson and Ray Moss. Griffin
and Drye are the two injured
runners.
Book
“We only have two more meets
scheduled,” continued Murphy.
“They are October 17 in
Lynchburg and October 23 at St.
Andrews. The biggest problem
here with cross country is that we
have no track program, and this is
why most boys run cross country,
to keep in shape for trach season.
There aren’t many boys who will
run just cross country.”

Claude Savage is a very familiar
name to Charlotteans who keep
up with high school athletics, but
by the end of this winter, he
should be a familiar guy to all
UNCC students.
Savage, who coached wrestling
at Harding High for five years and
is currently assistant football
coach at Myers Park high, has
been selected to replace Coach
Flemming as UNCC wrestling
coach. Flemming resigned from
the post in August.
“I think Coach Savage will do a
good job and we were very
fortunate to get him,” said
Murphy.
Savage will remain at Myers
Park, but will take this on as a
part time job. Instead of getting a
full time replacement for
Flemming, the Athletic
Department decided to break his
job down and fill the holes that
way. Flemming’s other head
coaching job, cross country, will
be taken over by Murphy.

Yes tennis feins, the tennis
courts will soon be ready for use.
Murphy informed this reporter
that as soon as the courts are
completely finished, the nets will
go up.
“The workers told me that
without rain, they would be ready
for use next Wednesday (today).
But we are going to make sure the
courts are definitely ready for
play. We need them very badly for
classes and for the tennis team.”
Anyone who is interested in
coaching a girls football team
please contact Coach Kerr in the
athletic office. By the way, the
girls are fielding five teams this
year in the intramural league, two
more than last season. The guys
have 14 teams in their two
leagues, five more than last
season.
“The intramural program really
looks good right now,” said Kerr.
“With so many teams, we are
having a slight problem with
scheduling. If the other intramural
field was ready for play, it would
be a breeze, but I think everything
will work out okay.”
Bowlers expect
success for ‘70
by mike liollaiid
Under the guidance of Coach
Dean MacKay, this years UNCC
Bowling Team appears to be
headed for another outstanding
season. Returning members of last
years DIAC championship team,
are standouts Danny Ewing, Jery
Hensley, Ron Gandy, and Steve
Dendrick, all of whom finished
among the top ten bowlers in tire
conference.
This year, however, UNCC will
participate in the Southern
Inter-collegiate League. This
league, which is divided into two
divisions. North and South, will
include some of the largest
schools in the Southeast. UNCC,
which is in the Northern Division,
will compete against Maryland,
Virginia, UNC-Chapel Hill, and
North Carolina A. & T. for
division honors. The Southern
Division includes South Carolina,
Clemson, Georgia Tech,
Appalachian, and Tennessee.
League competition is due to
get underway November 1, and
continue througli March 20.
Tournaments will begin on April 3
when the two division winners
will square off to battle for the
League Championship.
The UNCC Bowling Team
presently consists of nine
members. Coach MacKay
explained, however, that the team
could take up to as many as
fifteen, with the top six men, along
with one substitute seeing most ot
the competition.
He strongly urges anyone with
any bowling desire or experience
to try out for the team, as the
Forty-Niners bowlers plan to
continue their winning ways.
Home lanes are located at North
29.

Chi Phi falls
to Engineers
by don cousar
Wednesday, Oct. 7 was a cool
day to have some fun-on the
intramural football field. Chi Phi
action and the Engineers proved it
so. It was an action game as Mike
Bingham ran and tossed to
Tommy poteat for the Engineer’s
first TD. Bingham ran in the extra
point. Quickly, Chi Phi quarter
back David Nye led his team to
score by hitting George Lloyd for
a long gain and Pete Donahue for
a TD. They missed the extra point
here which proved a crucial
mistake.
Next, the Engineers again
scored on a 50 yd. run by
quarterback Bingham. The extra
point was missed. Immediately
taking the kick-off, Chi Phi’s Nye
began to show his coordination.
He passed to Johnny Johnson
who ran broken-fild like 0-J-
Simpson for 30 yards before firing
a touchdown pass to Pete
Donahue-all in one 70 yd. play-
George Lloyd ran in the extra
point.
This tied the score at 13 all-
This same combination of Nye to
Johnson to Donahue and,
addition, to Lloyd-all in a single
ply-scored another touchdown
later but was called back on e
holding penalty. The Engineers
kept the pressure on as Bingham
tossed to Don HatJy to score
their favor 20-13. Right away Ch'
Phi roared back with Dave Taylot
Tunning a beautiful double reverse
for 30 yds. to set Lloyd up for ^
40 yard touchdown play; Lloytl
ran hard the whole game. Without
the extra point to tie the ganae>
Chi Phi found themselves with 1^
and were happy to see a long
Bingham run called back as the
film ran out. Final score-
Engineers 20; Chi Phi 19. It was
good to see plenty of smiles on
these rugged faces-reminded me
of the games we played
Vietnam.
