He is a southern boy (Georgia) with an accent to prove it, he is very interested in art and plans to go into that .type of field after graduation; he is a business major; he’s in love with Merle Haggard and country and western music; but what probably means most to him right now, is the fact that he plays guard for the UNCC basketball team. Black, a 6-0 transfer from Gainesville Jr. College in Georgia, is a quite and friendly type of guy who is intent on one thing, being a winner. That is one reason he came to UNCC. He had been in close contact with head coach Bill Foster since his sophomore year in high school, and played freshman ball at The Citadel, where Foster was varsity assistant coach. He know’s Foster’s winning reputation. “He’s a winner,” claimed Black. “He’s never had a losing team. He’s going to bring a winner here, too. Coach Foster is a defensive coach and that is what it takes to wm. Even though he averaged 20 points a game last year for Gainesville, Chris doesn’t get as big a thrill out of pumping in a 20 footer as he does maldng a good pass. “I would rather make a good assist or stop an opponent from scoring than score myself,” he said. “In high school, scoring is the big thing, but in collage ball, you find out scoring isn’t everything.” Black has a philosophy about basketball that is similar to that of coach Foster’s. “I think basketball teaches and helps you in everything you do. It developes your pride and discipline,' and these are very important factors. I think people look for athletes after school is out to work for them because they know what the athletes have been through. I think in general, basketball teaches you a lot about life.” The local busing situation in Charlotte is something new to Chris, who says there is no such problem in Georgia. “I’m not that familiar with the busing situation here,” he explained. “You might think Georgia would have a bad racial situation but it is really one of the best in the country. It has been very fortunate because it has had very few instances of trouble. It is a bad situation here and I hope they get it straightened out.” Chris has several pro basketball favorites such as Jerry West who “does everything well,” and Joe Caldwell who “isn’t bad either”; but he hasn’t even given a thought about playing pro basketball. “Right now. I’m mainly interested in commercial art and I probably will go to art school after graduation. This school doesn’t offer an art major so I am majoring in the closest thing I could find to it, business.” And what about that country and western music? “I didn’t want to bring my records to school with me because I didn’t want everybody to make fun of me. But I was surprised because half of the team likes that kind of music. I don’t know exactly why I like it. I guess I’m just an old country boy at heart.” The pursued and the pursuerer.
