succumbed to a 63 per cent
field goal shooting exhibition
by Xavier University, and
fell, 74-68 Monday night.
The Musketeers depended
upon the shooting eyes of
6-4 junior forward Jerry
Helmers and junior guard
Doug Alt. Helmers hit 11 of
14 shots from the floor and
seven straight free throws for
29 points, while Alt canned
12 of 19 shots for 24.
Alt and Helmers scored
four points each in the final
three minutes to pull from a
64-63 lead to 72-64 to lock
up a close fight.

goal for over 10 minutes.

The 49ers return home

The 49er guards turned in their
best show of the year, according
to Foster. Charlie Bryson,
benched in favor of Helms, picked
up 11 points on five of seven from
the floor; Jerry Boggs hit 5 of 12
for 11, and sub Larry Reid scored
10 with seven rebounds.
The 49ers closed the gap to
three in the second half at 41-44,
but the Rockets popped back out
to a 10-point cushion at 51-41
behind Hess and Chapman. UNCC
never closed to less than seven
The 49ers suffered through a
terrible night from the floor,
hitting only 19 of 57 shots for
33.3 per cent while Toledo was
connecting on 23 of 46 shots, or
50 per cent.

didn’t score another field goal for
nearly five minutes, after which
Toledo was up by 23-16. Tire
Rockets led at the half, 35-27.
