Murphy. The 49ers face a tough task, playing eight of their matches on the road, while having the home In The Lockeroom with ron foster RECRUITING IS NEXT With the 49er basketball season complete Coach Bill Fosters efforts have turned to recruiting. After compiling a remarkable 15-8 record this ^ason Foster will be looking for a big man to aid the rebounding of the somewhat small 49er roundballers. course advantage only twice. The two home matches are scheduled late in the season and will be held on the new Forest Pawtuckett Golf Course. “We don’t have much depth,” said 49er golf coach Floyd Kerr, “and will be counting on four boys to carry the load for us.” A bright spot for UNCC is the addition of Terry Mauney to the squad. Mauney finished second in the 1970 Charlotte City Amateur and placed seventh in the North Carolina Amateur tourney last year. Other golfers expected to help carry the load for the 49ers are returning veteran Danny Randall, freshman Chuck Little and sophomore Steve Kiser. i > Foster who says he was pleased but certainly not satisfied with season is looking at a number of good high school prospects. One ^ those prospects who is almost certain to become a 49er next season is a Oil H I O* Union-Furnace Ohio boy named Dave Poling. UlC* At 6-5 Poling would be a welcomed addition to the 49er yearlings both on and off the court. Poling who is a scholar as well as a top notch basketball player, would fit well into the 49er picture. And Poling isn’t ®11 that Foster has his eye on either, don’t forget Charlotte Mecklenburg has produced some fine players this season and Foster isn’t the type to °ver look his own backyard. When next season does come around again the 49ers will face a much tougher schedule with the likes of Oklahoma, Mississippi, State 3nd Tulane on tap there won’t be much room for error. DAVIDSON CHOKES AGAIN After watching the Southern Conference Tournament last week end here are two observations. First many Charlottean’s forgot that Uavidson college is the world’s greatest choking basketball team. After 3^-1 Southern conference mark and seated first in the tournament the Wildcats managed to remind the Charlotte fans that they still were the S'eatest chokers as they took the gas last Friday from the next power in *he Southern league Furman. Seated fifth in the tournament the Paladins under the direction of Williams left no doubt who would be wearing the crown as they 82ve Davidson all they wanted in upsetting Terry Hollands Wildcats. THE GREAT SILENCER foe Frazier proved that Cassius Clay would have been better off in *he Army last Monday night. Frazier who said he would win or else did just that as he hung a ^Presidented silence on the Louisville Lip in the world greatest two performance that Hollywood has ever produced. Look out for ® rematch. TENNIS IS COMING j foe Kingery will coach the revampped 49er tennis effort as the UNcc Netters ease back into the event with ten or so matches.
