L Thursday, March 18, 1971 ^Equipped with umbrella The Carolina Journal Page 7 Swashbuckler Susie goes a fencing Although Susie’s fencing techniques leave much to be desired, John -lemmer takes time out to show her the rudiments of fencing, (photo ’y mike smith) by susie sutton I was disappointed when I found I couldn’t wear a ruffled shirt. But the UNCC Fencing Club Practices in tee shirts and sweat Pants. So did I. John Clemmer, the president, fold me he could teach me the rudiments of Fencing in one lesson. Sceptically I accepted his ^vitation to join the Fencing f-lub for an evening. Each Tuesday night the dozen so Fencing club members gather in the gym to improve on fheir fencing skill. The clattering foil against foil can be heard ■Echoing down the basement hall. Two of the club members helped me into a padded jacket. It Reminded me of a straight jacket, f'st then I thought 1 ought to *3ve my head examined. What if I got stabbed? John quieted my fears. Before he’d let me play with it, he Explained that the end of the foil Jyas blunted. To further protect he opponent a little rubber button that looked like a cap “En Garde” That phrase conjured up thoughts of D’Artagnen and the three musketeers. In anticipation of my fencing lesson I’d mimicked screen swashbucklers fencing my mirror with my umbrella. Alas--my fencing technique still left much to be desired. How people could look graceful in the “en garde” position I’ll never know. The feet are placed one in front of the other 10” apart, the toes are pointed out, knees bent, the chin is up, left arm bent in the air, hand dangling helplessly, with the right hand extended holding the foil. ®jaser for a pencil is placed at the ‘•p. Well, now John taught me how to lunge. Do you have to be coordinated? Read on. As your foot goes forward the foil goes out, your knees bend more and your left hand goes down like the flag on a mailbox. All at once. If that’s not coordination, what is? This maneuver I rehearsed several times and settled down to watch as Dennis Orton and Tricia Stuut practiced. Orton learned to fence in England where he went to college. N e ws - In- Brief The UNCC 1971 Forum “Seminar with Herman Kahn” may be viewed on Channel 42 on the following dates, Thursday, March 25, 7:30 P.M., and Monday, March 29, 6:00 P.M. Interviewing will begin within two weeks. Lon Weston The celebrant for the March 21 edition of the Creative Worship Experience in Sanford Hall is Dr. Seth Ellis, Director of the Summer Sessions and Evening Programs. The celebration will begin at 10:00 A.M. in Hanford library lounge. Drawing from selections of contemporary poetry. Dr. Ellis will discuss “the struggle for self-identity in a world '''liich is barren of spiritual value.” Refreshments will be served and dress will be casual. IXOYC invites all students to come. I knew he was good from the way he dressed. His garb was a contrast to sweat suits, fatigues, and jeans. He wore sneakers like everybody else, but white knickers that buckled at the knee. His white shirt contrasted to the tan jackets everyone else wore. On the left breast guard of his shirt was a tiny heart, stitched in white. He fired back an English accented curt reply, “I don’t usually teach girls saber; they are too vicious.” Dennis and Tricia had a match to see who could score five “hits” in the chest area first. Tricia has been fencing for six months. The pair placed the mesh masks on their faces and went to it, Tricia backing him into the corner, but experience will win out. Becky went next against Dennis. He beat her too. After seeing how it was done, John and I went back to practicing. ■ Sandy-liaired John explained what Orton meant when lie said “cat” and “cease” while fencing. Those are the names of the target areas of the chest. Translated from the french cat (quatre) is area 4 and cease (six) means 6. The/position of the attacker’s foil on that of the defender decides wliich part of the chest would get the hit. John, who has been fencing a year and a half, is hard to catch off guard, even with an injured foot which prevented him from opposing anyone but me. We “fought” for twenty minutes. He won each time, though he taught me to advance, down in little jumps while maintaining the en garde position. Also he taught me to block (parry) lunges. The only thing 1 was good at was the retreat. That 1 learned very well..Either that or be killed! Not really, the equipment is safe and the rules render the sport harmless unless you’re uncoordinated and out of shape. As for me, after I finished 1 thought I’d never walk again. Next Tuesday night why not put some I fun in your life-try fencing. the howard hanger trio “Our society (our world) has become so spectator-oriented-sit, watch, and judge-that seldom, if ever, do we feel called upon to actually get into something. We don’t live, we make a living. We don’t love, we make it. We don’t worship, we go to church.” The Howard Hanger Trio challenges you to stop spectating and to become involved, for a change. The Trio will appear in concert in the Parquet Room on March 24 at 11:30 a.m., and will present an experience in jazz. They invite you to share with them in the joy of sound and movement. Admission to the concert is free. The members of the Trio, who will be brought to UNCC by the United Religions Ministries, are from Emory University in Atlanta. Artists in the art of interpretation and communication, the Trio members blend traditional songs with contemporary interpretations.
