Boles placed eight in state
competition and is 6-0 this year,
with all his victories coming on

The team is gearing up for

Regionals of the NCAA in
Cincinnati in late February. Coach
Alder feels that at least two UNCC
wrestlers can qualify for the final
tournament.
Coach Alder anticipates a full
team next year. If UNCC has
wrestlers competing in every class,
the team record will not reflect the
thirty or so points now lost
because of forfeiting some weights.

Dae back,
Thames hot
Coach Bill Foster's 49er squad is
playing its best basketball of the
season. A lineup change in the road
victory over Loyola of New Orleans
that saw big Harold Thames open
at the pivot, with Terry Sloan and
Robert Earl Blue on the front line,
and steady guards Jerry Boggs and
Rick Dobson has produced three
convincing victories.
"We are playing good team
basketball at this point," said
Foster, "and it has reflected in
both our offensive and defensive
performances." Foster added that he
planned to continue to utilize as
many as eight or nine men during
the course of the game, as the 49er
bench has played almost as well as
the regulars during the four-game
winning streak. Foster has been
especially pleased with the play of
forward Marshall Thaxton, a junior
college transfer from Wingate.
Thaxton experienced difficulties in
adapting to Foster's brand of
basketball, but has provided solid
play in the last three contests.
Oddly enough, the man replaced
in the starting lineup by Thames,
senior center Norris Dae, was on
the verge of breaking the UNCC
career scoring reocrd. Dae, who
played two years for UNCC squads
in the old Dixie Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference prior to
Foster's tenure as 49er head coach,
needs only 3 points to surpass the
955 markers amassed by Jerry
Anthony (1965-69). An injured
thumb on his shooting hand had
limited Dae's action in the past
three contests, but he came back
with a solid 8-point performance in
a reserve role in the 49ers 87-69
victory over Austin Peay on Feb. 8.

Sloan scores 25
Peay falls by 18
by j.c. meadows
If anyone was perplexed as to
why Austin Peay beat UNCC at the
start of this season, they are
probably in the nut house after
Tuesday night's home game against
the same team.
This time it was an 18-point
victory for the 49ers.
It was no contest really. The
49ers held a 16 point lead at
half-time and after a slow start in
the second half, it was downhill all
the way.
Terry Sloan had a field day for
the 49ers, scPring a game high of
25 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
It was good to see Norris Dae
back in action again and it was
good for UNCC to have him back.
Norris aided the 49ers with 8
points and 6 rebounds.
Harold Thames was hot all night
as he pumped in 14 points and
snatched 10 rebounds.
The high man for Austin Peay
was 6'7" Howard Jackson (23
points) who kept Peay in the game
on several occasions with excellent
play.
If the 49ers continue to play like
they have for the past two games,
they stand a better-than-even chance
of knocking off 11th ranked
(nationally) Marshall University here
on Feb. 19.
18 students
UNCC in tourney
by Sharon deck
Eighteen UNCC students competed in bowling, billiards, bridge, and table
tennis at the Regional Recreational Tournament in Blacksburg, Va., this
weekend.
UNCC's best chance of a first place is in pool, according to Jon
Thomas in the Union office. Steve Murray of UNCC placed third in the
competition last year.
In past years, UNCC has taken firsts in men's team bowling and in
men's individual bowling.
Other chances for victory this year are in women's individual bowling
and in table tennis singles.
A victory in table tennis doubles is doubtful, Thomas said, because the
two players have never played together.
Team bowling prizes are up for grabs. Winning in bowling depends on
every member of the team consistently rolling good games.
Our chances are worst in bridge. Bridge competition is always fierce, and
some of the best college players in the South participate.
Methods of selecting team members vary with each sport. Bridge and
billiards players were selected in campus tournaments. Because of the
wealth of good pool players on campus, the tournament featured excellent
competition this year.
The top five players on the eight-man bowling team will comprise the
bowling contingent.
No tournament was held in table tennis. The committee instead selected
players that they knew were good.
Because of the failure of the Chess Club to hold a campus tournament,
no chess players will compete at Blacksburg.
Also, we are sending no women pool players and no women table tennis
players.
The tournament, sponsored by tha Association of College
Unions-International, is the prelude to national competition.
Students from colleges in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Tennessee, and Kentucky will compete.
In the past, the tournament has always been held here. Now it rotates
between UNCC, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the University of
Tennessee.
Any student interested in trying out for next year's teams should
contact the Union office in the fall. Potential bowlers face the task of
trying to knock one of the current bowlers off the team.
