page three/the journal/april 18, 1972 ABCDEF •••ouch! A JOURNAL ANALYSIS The general faculty of UNCC defeated the controversal Niccolai grade system proposal by a 3 to 2 margin. The proposal, written by Dr. Niccolai of the Math Department, eliminated D's and F's, retained grades A, B, and C, and based a student's eligibility to continue on the amount of accumulated "No Credits", "Incompletes", and "Withdrawals". A "No Credit" would have been equivalent to a D or an F, an incomplete, if not made up, would have converted to a "No Credit", and a "Withdrawal" would have counted against a student if he had dropped after the first few weeks of classes. A student accumulating more than six of these "unsatisfactory hours" during any term would have been placed on probation and any student with "unsatisfactory hours" exceeding certain levels would have been suspended. The complexity of the Niccolai system was one reason cited for it's failure. Another was the complaint from students and faculty that it was more stringent than the present system. An alternate grade system proposal has been written by Dr.'s Wayne, Crippen, and Kim of the Engineering Dept. Under tKeir proposal D's and F's would still be given but the D and F course could be repeated and if, for example, a student gets a B the second time, the B would count as the grade of the course and the D or F on the transcript would be marked-through (not removed) and would not count academically against the student. However, it would be possible for a student under this systme to be suspended before he gets a chance to make up a D or F. The new proposal also requires that a 2.00 grade point average be maintained for all students regardless of the number of hours accumulated. The requirements for continued enrollment (see fig. //I) do not explicitly show this but if one divides the quality points required for "good standing by the "credit hours carried" a 2.00 would be required for any number of hours. A student under this system would be suspended if on probation for the two consecutive semesters. This system differs from the present one in that attempted hours are used to determine quality point requirements rather than credit hours and, the quality point requirements at certain intervals are higher than present. For example, a junior with 59 attempted hours (passed plus failed) would be suspended with 104 quality points or less — the equivalent of a 1.76 grade point average. Under the present system a student with 59 credit hours could stay in school with a 1.30 grade point average, (see fig. 112). The proposed system has a new grade of "DF" (Deferred) which could be given to a student who is passing a course but has not finished all of the required work. Any student with a "DF" would have one calendar year to complete the course but if he did not he would be given the grade of "No Credit" which would not count against him. The grade of "Incomplete" would still be given but the instructor would Fig. 1 Excerpts from the proposed system's "Requirements for Continuing Enrollment - expressed in quality points “ UNCC Credit hours carried 29 59 89 110 Withdrawal Range 044 0-104 0-164 0206 Probation Good Standing 45-57 105-117 165-177 207-219 58 118 178 220 Fig. 2 PRESENT SYSTEM PROPOSED SYSTEM Credit Hours 29 59 89 110 GPA Needed to Continue 1.10 1.30 1.60 1.90 Hours Passed plus Failed 29 59 89 110 GPA that would result in Suspension 1.52 1.76 1.84 1.87 Present GPA standards contrasted with those of proposed system. Also, the "I" would convert to an "F" if not removed within the next semester in residence or within one calendar year - "whichever comes first." Withdrawals would be given only on the date when unsatisfactory grade reports are due or within 10 days after that date. An exception is made if a student withdraws completely from the University. Dr. Crippen, one of the authors of the proposal, said transfer students would enter the chart according to the number of hours they have. Thus, if someone from outside of the Consolidated University entered UNCC with 64 hours of credit he would be given 128 quality points - the equavilent of a C average. Crippen was uncertain has to how the proposal, if adopted, would affect currently enrolled students and he wanted a hearing to be held on this proposal and any others. The chance of any grade system proposal being considered this semester is nill because there is not enough time. The candiates YOUNG I, RON YOUNG, as the chairman of Rules Committee of Student Legislature and of Community Relations Committee, have worked for more effective student representation and increased student involvement at UNCC. My organization of the on-campus voter registration drives illustrates this point. So, when voting, I encourage you th THINK YOUNG. HERNDON I am a philosophy major. One of my main concerns is the effeciency of the Student Legislature and its resopnsiveness to the students. If Student Govern ment is to ever assume a more important role in university decision-making, it must first have strong support from the Student Body—something which can't be expected until it is proven that it is deserved. BRUCE Let Ester Bruce represent your interest on Student Legislature. Vote Big Ester, for the College of Humanities. HOWELL There is an incressing need for better communications in progressing years. I, a rising sophomore, will help these needs by running for the position of Student Representative to the Student Media Board. I believe that more student activities should be voiced in the student newspaper and the yearbook. FOSTER Many are called, but few are elected. Vote FISH, as your Representative from the college of Humanities. Charlotte, N.C. 394-5111 WILSON As an interested student, concerned in student affairs, I am compaigning for the position of student representative on the newly created Student Media Board, which is now an active branch of the SGA. I believe that all publications published by students on this campus should voice an equal representation ofof All students, not ONLY those who consider themselves the "elite". NESBITT The Student Legislature has considerable influence and authority* concerning student affairs and makes decisions which directly affect each and every one of us in our daily lives here on campus. Thereford, I think it mandatory that we , as students, have adequate and qualified representation in the Legislature. Also, I feel a major criterion should be that the representatives be genuinely interested in working for those things which would be harmful or retarding to a happy, contented student existence. Only by incorporating the feelings and ideas of other students will the Legislature be a success this coming year. This, in essence, is exactly what I hope to do. HOEFLICK As a rising senior, I place much emphasis in the upcoming staff of theRogues 'N Rascals yearbook. I pity to a great extent the poor excuse of a yearbook we had last year. I would, for once in this school's history, like to see a yearbook published and returned to the students before the summer break like many other colleges do. I ask for' your vote April 19-20 as a Student Representative to the Student Media Board. HARTMAN It is my feeling that responsible journalism is developed by those who read it. I feel also that responsible journalism has not taken its place here at UNCC—especially that of’ recent yearbooks and literary magazines. I urge all fellow students in their support of my election. Place your vote on April 19 and 20th. Thank You Eddie BUTTERFIELD Was a member of: Student Legislature - Commuter Representative 71-72, Rules Committee, Judicial Committee, Finance Committee.
