TO SEE THE UNIVER^ITY.^
NOW THAT YOU’Ri HERL^
Just a few words about the “purpose" of this Orientation Issue. First let's define our terms.
purpose (pur’ pes) n. 1. The object toward which one strives or for which something
exists; goal; aim. 2. A result or effect that is intended or desired; intention. 3.
Determination; resolution. 4. The matter at hand; point at issue.
The "goal" which we are “striving” for and we hope “for which something exists" is the awareness in
you that coming to the University means coming in contact with many strange and unfathomable new
things. While you are here you will learn something whether you want to or not. The purpose and direction
you give this learning is entirety up to you, and no one but you.
We have tried in sort of a sporadic and surrealistic way to give you a picture of University life in general
and life at this University in particular. Some things are good and some are not. All can. with time, energy,
love, and understanding be changed for the better.
This issue covers some of these things well, some not so well and some not at all. Nothing will or should
replace your own personal quest for truth.
We have not tried to replicate, duplicate or Impersonate materials which you will be given during
Orientation. If we have, then it was unintentional or from a different viewpoint.
If there is one thing the Journal is not, and should not. become, it is a publicity and public relations
organ for the University. They take care of that very capably for themselves. We are UNCC's student
newspaper, dedicated to publishing items of interest and the opinions and views of the University
community as a whole.
If there is anything in this issue which you would like to talk about further, come by the Journal office,
write us a letter or call. We are always receptive to comments, criticism and/or conversation. And our door
is always open. Try it.
