A Look at the RCs
page five/the journal
In each dorm. In the apartment
next to the reception desk, is the
dorm's residence coordinators.
Residence coordinators have a
variety of tasks. When the
residence coordinator program
was under the auspices of the
Dean of Student's Office, their
tasks were primarily with
counseling and programming.
Now, under the supervision of the
Residence Life Office, they have
added administrative functions to
their duties.
The RC's are primarily
interested in the students in their
dorms, and concerned because so
few students know of their
function or their existance.
Marian Beane, the RC in
Sanford, said that most of the
students who know that the RCs
exist think they are there to
dispense keys. But, to become an
RC, a master's degree in
counseling or student personality
is needed.
Tony Hughes of Dorm '72,
now in his second year as a RC,
said that he heard once that most
people considered him to be
somewhere between Peer
Counseling and the Counseling
Center.
Chuck Colby, the Moore RC,
and Marcia Baroody, of Dorm '73*
also stressed the fact that they are
available to students If a serious
problem arises.
Most students, they feel, will
take their problems to the RA or
go to their friends for advice.
Most of the counseling the RC
does takes place when the
students problem is too much for
the RA to handle, or when the
problem Is serious enough for the
student to seek professional
advice backed by some authority.
The RC's handle an incredible
range of problems, from
homesickness to drug overdoses.
They advise student groups, who
may come to them with some
ideas on programming. For
example, the dorm programs on
socialism are student oriented. In
Moore, Colby said, the students
are getting together for a
restoration program. Painting and
getting furniture are two of the
goals there.
All taught the course required
for RA's last semester. Hughes
teaches HDL 201 and works with
the Counseling Center. Ms.
Baroody is working on a child
development center for children
of UNCC students. Colby is on
several university committees, and
Ms. Beame is the foreign student
advisor.
The RC's supervise the
selection of the RA's and serve as
consultants when the RA's have
problems they can't handle.
They also supervise college
work — study programs, handle
security, and keep with the keys
and dorm inventories.
Mostly, however, they work
with groups and with counseling
services.
On the programming side of
the duties, several events are
coming up thanks to the RC's.
Besides coffeehouses and films,
a representative from the Peace
Corps, a hypnotist, and a
handwriting analyst will be
visiting the dorms this semester.
Plans are in the works for
encounter groups, including a
weekend marathon for couples.

eligible people who are interested
in participating. We are giving all
students on campus a chance to
play inter collegiate club football.
Also all upper classmen who are
unable to play the spring season
but still wish to play next fall
must attend. We would like to fill

Review

Almost four years have passed
since the greatest force in musical
recording history ceased to exist.
The Beatles, dead as present
recording stars, are still one of the
most popular groups in the
business. Their career is history as
the Beatles, but each of the four
members has gone separate ways
since the split and have been
surprisingly successful.
Paul McCartney was known as
the baby-faced Beatle. While
playing bass guitar on the early
cuts, Paul sang lead on many of
the records. In the later years, he
played the piano and sung the
majority of the songs. McCartney
was not the single man behind the
Beatles, one man could not have
been, but he was one of the
perfect ingredients that made the
group.
With the Beatles, Paul's writing
talent was not truly recognized.
All songs were published under
the authorship of Lennon and
McCartney. However, the song
most often attributed solely to
McCartney is "Yesterday," a
simple masterpiece with soft,
meaningful lyrics.
Following the split, Paul was
forced to work on his own. This
brought about the production of
two mediocre albums,
McCartney and ram, which
were accepted by true Beatles'
fans but not by the remainder of
the music world. However, singles
released off of the two albums
fared much better. "Maybe I'm
Amazed'' and ''Uncle
Albert/Admiral Halsey" had a
slow rock style that has become
characteristic of McCartney and
did well on the charts.
McCartney, sensing that he was
not a superstar on his own, sought
to form another group. He joined
with some old friends an; his wife,
the former Linda Eastman, to
form Wings. Their first album was
entitled WILD LIFE, yet it
retained the sound Paul had used
in his first two albums. One cut,
"Love Is Strange" was appealing.
The rest was second-rate rock.
However, Wings latest album
RED ROSE SPEEDWAY, is a
masterpiece. Mccartney has
overcome his final hurdle and
proven that he is capable of
writing beartiful melodies in the
style that made the Beatles
famous. On the album, McCartney
provides a variety of sounds
including the smash hit single,
"My Love." With this album]
McCartney has shown the public
that neither he nor the Beatles
were flukes.
