Meet the President Journal Managing Editor Michael Evans had the opportunity to talk with Student Body Government President Ed Hendricks concerning his coming months in office. Below is the interview printed in its entirety. Journal President Butterfield insisted he was the President of thee students nof ot the SGA. How do you feel about this? Hendricks: I agree with that statement. On most of the letterheads now it says President of the Student Bo student body as oposed to the government. I was elected by the student body, not just student body government. I feel that it is my job to represent all of the students in all of my dealings with the administration, not just represent the Student Government as such. Journal: Do you think you are a true voice of the students? Hendricks: In talking to many of the transfer students and many of the incoming freshmen I said that I consider myself as a voice of the students only insofar as that they wanted me to be their vocie by telling me what they want me to say. f would like to see more participation on their part. They can relay through their representatives on the Legislature what they think should be said to the administration. The represetnatives on the SGA through the representatives of the Student Media Board, or the University Program Board can come to me. I feel that if I had enough input from all these, sources, I can speak cf rthe students. Journal: Do you think that Student Body Government is just the radical Dart of the student body or are they truely representative? Hendricks: I don't think that here is radical by any stretches of imagination. Here, I think that Student Government is re presentative of rnost of the stu dents. We're kind of low key, but we get our point across. ' Journal: What exactly is your job? Hendricks: I am a representative of all these people, SMB,SGa,UPB, to the administration. ! represent all the branches to the administration. Journal: Could students exist without Student Government? Hendricks: Obviously the school could survive, and I'm sure that the students could survive. The thing that we do provide for them is we make life a whole lot eaiser for them. For instance, without student government the administration could do anything that they wanted.. They could make any laws that cover photo, John Baynard Debra Miklowski, UNCC student at the lake. they wanted and any rules and regulations that they wanted. There would be no student voice on the activities of these committees. I have aa voting voice on the Board of Trustees, Council of Administration. Yes, the students could survive but life would be a whole lot more difficult. They wouldn't have a lot of things that we do have on this campus. I feel we have more freedom on this campus than po eople on other campuses fo. Journal: Is the?e any power in your Board ot Trustees vote? Hendricks: My vote counts every bit as much as anybody elses' vote on there. On the parking fees, I voted no, against the parking fees and it had to be duly recorded in the minutes that it was not a unanimous vote. I can influence their thinking sometimes, for instance with this latest thing with heJournal where some of the Board members ^vanted to see a little tighter control of what was published in the student newspaper and the student media, it sisn't come to a vote or anything but I was able to convince them that students can hangle a lot of these problems. I feel that my vote is very important on the Board of Trustees. Journal: Do you feel that the Univer sity Senate .'iz really doing any thing for the students? Hendricks^,. . : Right now, it is hard to imagine, 'y year is almost half over and we're just getting the students in. I think a lot of the goals that I set when I first came into office are already being met. For instance, I wanted to have a legal defense council. He is already been nominated and approved by Student Legislature. His office will be available this year. We wanted to work of a University ambulance system. This is already being worked upon. We wanted to impr ve the ampitheater as a long term goal. This is already being done. We are appointing a committee now. We already have an architect possibly who may do the job for free. As far as planning the Student Government may suport and pay for the working of the ampitheater so that we can have outdoor concerts. Most of the long term goals that I advocated are really coming into light now. SBG Hendricks I think that this year the University Senate does have a chance to provide good university and student representation. Journal: Where is the power in the Student Constitution? Hendricks: It will hold power as far as the students go. The students wilt be regulated by it. The Students Constitution will naturally have to conform to the University's Constitution. Some of thechanges that have been proposed so far for the University's, Con stitution which the Student's Constitution as it presently exists are in conflict. We're foing to have to revise the Student's Con stitution after the University Constitution is rewritten in order to conform to some of the stipulations. I think we can do this and I firmly believe that this year the administration will accept the Student Con stitution. Journal: Do you have any long term goals for the remainder of your term in office? In light of the Hendricks interview, theJournal's roving reporter decided to sample student opinion of various UNCC students on what they think of Student Body Government. This was our response. What do you think of Student Body Government? I definately think we need one. What do you think of Student Body Government? Well, I think they are doing a great job. I've been here for three years, and it seems every year it gets better. What do you think of Student Body Government? I don't think we could do without it. They have done so much in the last couple'of years for the students here. What do you think of Student Body Government? I think they are improving. What do you think of Student Body Government? Oh, it is really great. What do you think of Student Body Government? Obviously it is in Its infancy, but it has great potential. The leadership is very capable and seems to move in the directions most students desire it it go.. What do you think of Student Body Government? I think if they were anything at all they could get rid of that $20 parking fee. What do you think of Student Body Government? I'm just a freshmen here, and I don't really know yet.
