the journal / page three / October 15,1974 Charity Game to Feature Club Football Team VNCC Soccer Wins Two Loses One by mark miller An unexpected phone call recently gave UNCC's club football program the greatest break it has yet received in its short history. The annual Freaks-Fuzz charity game in Merrcrial Stadium will feature the 49ers this year for the first time. UNCC's club team will meet the Fraternal Order of Police in the December 7 contest at 7:30. Financially, the game looks to be a big chance for our club team to gain city recognition. UNCC is to be in charge of by jerry proctor program and concession sales and hopefully the 49ers will be an annual participant in the game. Eight to ten thousand people are expected to attend the contest which will be promoted extensively by WBTV in Charlotte.. UNCC students are urged to help sell tickets to the contest, especially at all Charlotte Hornets home games.Prospective salesmen are reminded that they will be admitted free to all Hornet games in order to sell the tickets. First, some apologies are due for lumping three stories into one. There is no attempt here to disguise the two loses the soccer team acquired while playing Appalachian State, on September 29th, orChapel Hill's team on the 8th of October. On Sunday afternoon in Boone, UNCC was matching man for man a much improved soccer team. The result was an impressive match in which UNCC shrieked off the field with a 4-3 loss screaming jubulantly while the happy Apps dragged off, heads down, wondering what happened. Their superstar this year, David Moore, was previously captam of the Israeli national tearVr. They were disgusted that last year's game had ended UNCC 0, Appalachian 8. The key to the close loss tor UNCC was defense allowing a strong Appalachian offense only four goals, all of which were scored in the first halfy Goalie Bill Campbell glistened an his new green sweats was a one man virtuso, and had possibly the best save of his career in the last few seconds when David Moore of ASU threatened on a direct kick outside the 18 yard line. Campbell gave Moore the entire left side of the goal mouth, and then sprang like he was a world class goalie and punched the shot out of the very uppermost corner and it was beautiful. Offensive credit goes to Bobby Ross, who leads the scoring department this season and who scored two goals Sunday on Appalachian's goalie who, I understand is up for All-American. The other goal was scored by Bobby Doherty, who played a fine game covering David Moore. On October 5th over the break, the 49ers traveled to the land of the big shade trees, Carolina, where they incurred a 3-0 defeat. On October 5th over the break, the 49ers traveled to the land of the big shade trees, Carolina, where they incurred a 3-0 defeat. The 49ers were outplayed and deserved the loss, but the return game. I'm told is at home cn the 29th day of this month and the UNCC team will be working to change the outcome of that game. It was a long duel lust year with Chapel Hill winning the first game at UNCC and UNCC defeating them at home, hopefully the 49er squad will manage to play better soccer against Chapel Hill on the 29th than theyCdisplayed in Chapel Hill. Finally, this past Sunday UNCC breezed past an outdated Rock Hilt club, 3-2. The score may sound close, but it wasn't. John O'Bricky premiered as goalie, with an injured Bill Campbell screaming advice from the sidelines. That was worth watching. Goals were scored early in the first half by David McCormack with a burst of speed and a left wing special. The second goal came in the second half when goals were being greatly desired. Everyone was looking at each other and saying "We are outplaying them, how come we have not scored?" Bobby Doherty was bouncing balls off of fullbacks, goalies, goalposts, crossbars and everthing else, but could not get the ball an the cage. Happily Captain Jerry Smith radialed with his first goal of the season, and the second one of the game. The third goal came as Rock Hill had matched Jerry Smith's goal on a penalty kick and was scored by Bobby Ross, with a little help from his Rock Hillfriends. The UNCC club apologized to all its fans that showed up at the Newell field, which is now UNCC's very own and will be ready for the next home contest against Chapel Hill. Also, UNCC's new uniforms have arrived and the 49er team will be sporting English jerseys of kelly and white Sunday the 20th against Spartanburg's "Seizva Club."
