Springsteen:
Unkown Master
Though relatively popular
in New York and other
northern states Bruce
Springsteen seems to be almost
unheard of in this area. For
months I searched fruitlessly for
one of his two albums,
Greetings from Asbury Park,
and The Wild, the Innocent and
the E Street Shuffle. By sheer
luck my girlfriend found a copy
of The Wild, the Innocent and
the E Street Shuffle. I was
elated.
My first exposure to
Springsteen, a brief listening on
a friend's reel-to-reel, made me
want to hear more of this
relatively-unknown
singer-songwriter from New
York. When I played The Wild,
the Innocent and the E Street
Shuffle a few times I was
convinced it was one of the best
albums I had ever heard.
Springsteen's music is
difficult to describe but it does
show influences of Bob Dylan,
the Beatles and many of the
rockers of the 50's like Fats
Domino. Most of his songs seem
to deal with the street life of
New York City but remarkably
he doesn't drone over the same
subjects when he writes of the
city.
On The Wild, the Innocent
and the E Street Shuffle most of
the songs as I have stated deal
with the city. The first song on
the album, "The E Street
Shuffle", is probably the best
-by richard abernathy
cut on the record. Here we are
treated to first rate guitar work
by Springsteen and superb
backup by his band. The next
cut on the .album, "4th of July,
Asbury Park" is a subdued
ballad that seems to capture the
essence of what Asbury Park is
like. The main appeal of the
song, however, is Springsteen's
breathy vocal.
Another appealing song is
"Wild Billy's Circus Story", here
Springsteen rambles on about
the many zany characters
involved in a circus and also
paints a realistic portrait of
what the city to city circus life
is like. Although on most of the
songs Springsteen uses a full
band, on "Wild Billy's Circus
Story" Springsteen only uses
an acoustic guitar and the result
is just as spectacular.
The remaining songs on the
album, though not as good as
these, are still better than
anything I've heard recently.
None of them, by any means,
can be considered clunkers.
All in all, I would wholly
recommend this album to
anyone. It contains some of the
freshest songs and performances
to be released since the Beatles
and the Rolling Stones crashed
the scene in the early 60's. Also,
if you have a chance, make an
attempt to see him in person.
From what I hear he souuds just
as good live as he does on
record.

Movie Review
Rolling
Stones:
Fantastic!
What can you say about the
Rolling Stones? dagger sang,
dagger danced, dagger exploded,
dagger and the Stones fully lived
up to their reputation as " the
greatest fock and roll band in
the world". From beginning to
end you are totally mesmerized,
hypnotized and "demoralized"
by the incredible and
overwhelming amount of
physical as well as mental
energy put forth by these five
genii of rrusical creativity.
Even this was only a movie
one could envision that they
were at a Rolling Stones concert
except for one constantly
depressing factor: the sound.
Remember the forty thousand
dollars worth of sound
equipment that was to be
brought in especially for this
flick?Well apparently it was
brought in somewhere else
because it sure wasn't there, and
that's one hell of a bummer
because the Stones have to be
heard.
If you haven't figured it out
by now this is a great movie
even if you're not into the
Stones but especially if you are.
The movie starts out with
"Brown Sugar" al la Madison
Square Garden, dagger belted
out this and other "fazed
cookies" with his usual lustful
style, form and grace. The Fun
City fans ate it up. From there
by billy trexler
he and they swept on through
the country captivating and
tantalizing Stones heads
iiicluding those here in funky
C-Town. Their roster of hits was
almost inexhaustible as dagger's
energy; Street Fighting Man,
Happy, .Sweet Virginia,
Tumbling Dice, Gimme Shelter
and of course Midnight
Rambler. All done as only the
Stones could do them.
They say all good things
must come to an end and this
movie did with the Jumpin'
Jack Flash himself doing just
that comt)lete with rose petals
and a ten-gallon hat.
Describe this movie in a
one-word understatement;
FANTASTIC.
National Lampoon
Sensational
If you're into National
Lampoon you will love this
issue. It deals strictly with the
trauma and hell raising filled
years of puberty. Anyone at all
familiar with Lampoon will
know that with topics' like this
the issue has to be a winner.
It starts with a foxy young
lady on the front cover and does
not let go until the end of the
rrBg. It has a little bitt of
everything. From VD comics to
a teenage Gag Dating Guide,
with a Nancy Drew mystery
written in the typical style of
the Hardy Boys and Nancy
Drew. In this episode, she is on
the Patty Hearst case. They even
have a pictorial article that is
every American boy's dream:
"three pretty girls doing just
what you want so you can
masturbate."
The section on "Real Boys
Life" gives helpful tips on how
to rock a car from a highway
overpass, tells how to play frog
baseball c^^nd has s the
ever-popular Boy Scoui Pee Wee
Harris vandalizing his school.
Some of the fuuniest things
in this issue are the comic strip
type articles. The one called
"Sex education Class" reveals
that boy's fantasies of what goes
on in a girls only sex Education
class are really true, down to
one iof the girls', in the class
stripping an order to illustrate
the female body.
Every guy and maybe a few
girls can get off on Trots and
Bonnie in "Teachers Pet". This
one shows what happens in a
girls junior high school gymn
class and in the locker room'
after class while the lesbian
instructor is getting her rocks
off checking out the shower
scene.
Remerrber Nancy Drew?Or
the Hardy Boys? How many
nights or long trips with the
family did you spend engrossed
in their adventures. Well if you
want to remember the old days
there is a Nancy Drew mystery
in this issue and it: a rla';«:in. In
Nancy Drew is not all she is
knocked up to be.
But let us not forget " News
On The March." The headlines
this month: "They have Fired
the Shit Heard Round The
World NIXON QUITS.
Democracy in action! Ford
Elected President by Smallest
Laudslide In History;
(Unprecedented' Mandate: He
Carries No States, Gets No
“by billy trexler
Votes. According to the news
article Nixom had worked out
several strategies to keep him an
the White House the week
before his resignation. One of
these is: Nixon wears a ton suit
with stamps on it, go to the
headquarters of the US Postal
Service, be returned to the
White House by a postal official
delivered to Mrs. Nixon, Mrs.
Nixon does not open him,
anyone trying to remove him is
tampering with US mail. Then
there is Tell Debbie.
Dear Abbie sit up and take
notice. Debbie's problems are
even better than yours. Face it,
people would rather read about
a lady rolling her baby down a
hill dn the strollerr than about
somebody not knowing how to
till their husband he has body
odor.
All in all this issue should
prove to be a classic in satire.
But then the National Lampoon
is a classic an satire. I
If you usually read
Lampoon and do uot have a
copy of this issue, run out and
buy it. if you usually do not
read it, ruu out and buy it
anyway.
