page five/the journal/november 19, 1974 S 3? i Club Football Budget Incorrect § To the editor: One of the marks of a good paper is its ability to investigate situations and report the facts. These facts should be true and representative of the area probed. This was not so in the 'Viewpoint' article on the Student Legislature allocations, at least as far as the football club is concerned. Our allocation was grossly misquoted. Mr. Larlwe also failed to indicated that the majority of our budget, the football club members themselves raise. Below is the totaled and correct budget for the Football Club's fall season. Insurance: Allocation(A)- $0.00, Raised{R)-$1630.00, Total (T)-$1 630.00. Game equipment: A — 1190.00, R-0.00, T-1 190.00. New equipment: A-0.00, R-538.30, T—538.30. Medical expenses: A- 1 1 5.60, R- 1 96.70, ,T—312.30. Game expenses: >A-1 773.00, R-1000.00, T—2773.00. Miscellaneous: A-0.00, R-835.00, T-835.00. Total fall budget: $7278.60. Student Legislature allocation: $3078.60. Club raised: $4200.00. The article of 11/12/74 stated erreneously that we had received money for our insurance. One can clearly see that we raise well over half of our budget. Also pointed out was that our budget indicated that we spent at least $200 per player. No argument there, in fact we spend considerably over that per player. Football is an expensive sport, much more so than soccer, as Mr. Larlwe said. Our club could be run on a budget of $400.00, if we cut insurance, in which case anybody injured is just out of luck, cut out all the purchases ^of new equipment, allowing our people to play in some defective and questionably saf ;equipment, cut out our game I uniforms, which allovw us to look like a team instead of second rate sandiot pick-up game, and were allowed to practice and play on one of the campus fields, in the event intramurals would let us and got the field in respectable shape which it is not in now. We think the expense is worth it. Those students who have seen our game wil probably agree. After all what': a mere $3000 when compared to UNCC's $250,000 basketball program? Jeff Sturkey Vice President UNCC Football Club North Americans Need To Learn Spanish To the editor: I have distributed stickers ike the above to several students, and they have also been distributed by Spanish professors on other campuses. We feel that this sticker shows very important factors that North Americans should take under consideration. It dhows •the need for learning Spanish because of four basic reasons: Because the closest neighbors the United States have are native Spanish speakers, cultural xchange is very important, trade with ail these Spanish countries is becoming essential, an everyday friendship with the rest of the world, especially with the rest of America, has been stressed. North Americans have been solated for a long time, believing that they did not need anything from anyone and that people should learn English if they wanted to do business v.ith them. But the situation is changing rapidly. Now North Americans need to trade with other countries In order to obtain Indispensable products such as petroleum, for example. Mexico, our closest neighbor, has the petroleum we need. But they resent trading with the United States because North Americans have not paid any attention to them, treating them as inferiors, despite their geographical proxirrity to each other. Now Is not too late to change. It is very important to establish friendship with the rest ACADEMIC RESEARCH LIBRARY Thousands of Topics $2.75 per page Send for your up-to-date, 176-page, mail order catalog of 5500 topics. Have you asked yourself these questions: Where do I live? is the USA the only country in America? Yes, you live in America, but there are sixteen Spanish speaking countries in America in addition to the USA. Also, Spanish is spoken in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico (sugar countries), making a total of more than 150 m illion Spanish-speaking people in America. As the population in the Spanish American countries grows tremendously because of the little use of birth control, the population will exceed that of the United States by 1980. English then might not be the main language, but Spanish could very well be. Also, there are more than19 million Spanish speaking people in the United States alone. Every day more industries, schools, banks, offices, stores, government departments, airports, etc. are requiring people whose main language is English and know Spanish. Because of the few capable people for these jobs, on many occasions the United States fails to arrive at a successful agreement with Spanish countries. Don't you think that if perhaps President Ford knew Spanish to be able to talk without a translator with President Echeverria things would be in a more optimistic way in respect to petroleum? I am sure that if Echeverria were the one needing the petroleum he would make an effort to talk to the President of the U.S. in English. I hope this will make you aware of the necessity of learning Spanish. I am sure that if you learn Spanish, it will help you!!
