I feel qualified to do so in light of the fact that from 1968 to 1972 I was secretary in the department she is referring to. At that time there was nine of 'them' (faculty members) and only one of 'us' (secretaries), so proportionately the odds were the same. Unfortunately, the chores and pressures she mentioned I can attest to as being real — not only in that department, but in many others across campus. It is not an easy job and secretaries are to be commended on their ability to recover from one day in time to do it all again the following day. I, too, typed letters, exams, kept budgets, worked on committee assignments, answered thephone, ran errands, xeroxed, ran stencils, etc. I also typed the entire Metrolina Atlas and kept up with two NSF funded institutes. Priorities are difficult to negotiate and there are times when one begins to feel as if she is regarded as a machine — but that's the job, baby, take it or leave it. The work situation Ann described does exist, and I am in full sympathy with her on this matter. But I refuse to see Dr. Stuart (of course it's the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences — who else puts out atlases?) publically represented so incorrectly. I was with the Department v\lien Dr. Stuart joined us as chairman and subsequently spent four years working closely with him. Never, not for one minute, was he anything less than honest, gentle, patient, thoughtful, understanding, helpful, sympathetic, insightful, genuine, and supportive. Occasionally I, too, would feel overwhelmed by demands placed on me by the job and Dr. Stuart would sit down with me and talk it out and we always came to a mutual understanding. He never failed to bring about results with faculty members. The problem so often arises simply because faculty members are not always aware of current work loads and priorities. He never expected me to crumble trying to 'finish' each day with its inherent tasks — all he asked was that I do my best, and with that kind of support it all became more of a gameful challenge rather than a hellish office situation. Ann Brashear was with the department for only SVz months — I was there four years. It's larger now and perhaps the closeness we once felt for each other may have diminished. Within a large number of people there are bound to be a few who are difficult to deal with. But Dr. Stuart isn't one of them. When I left the Geography Department to become a full-time student, it certainly wasn't because of any animosity. The hardest part of leaving was dissociating myself from participating in all our plans, which in the meanti,, have become realities - Masters in Geography, fa Earth-Life Science Buildinn he made me fell a part of thesi things, which comes about onl within the special relationsh between two people wh depend on and trust each othe within an atmosphere of muM respect.. It's been over two yea,, since I left the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences In a few weeks I will graduate and be on to other things But Dr. Stuart and his department have made an obvious impression on me and I can't leave UNCC without hangings there one more time for 'my' guys. Beth Chipley Larlee Speaks With False he would like nothing but a limited range carrier-current radio station to listen to then he is as backwards as his letter sounds. Dick Wyzanski WVFN Station Mgr. University Classified Tongue? Dear To the editor: Mr. Ian Larlee never ever attempted to talk with me about financial matters relating to WVFN before writing that nonsensical trash letter in the Journal relating to Media products and finances. He claims that both the radio station and the Journal should both be self supporting. Ridiculous. If he thinks that much advertising revenue can be brought in a year then I'd be more than glad to have him on my sales staff. Mr. Larlee is correct however in stating that WVFN has spent $15,000 like it had got the requested $30,000. This has been necessary to pave the way for an FM stereo station.
