Trustees Board names dorms,
other campus landmarks
The University of North
Carolina at Charlotte honored
some of its friends and
supporters Friday with the
naming of buildings and other
facilities.
The names were approved
by the Board of Trustees of
UNCC at their January meeting.
Two dormitories were
named for Governors Bob Scott
and Jim Holshouser. The four
12-story dormitories at UNCC
now carry the names of four
men who were governors during
the formative years of UNCC.
The first two were named for
Governors Terry Sanford and
Dan K. Moore.
The $4 million Earth-Life
Science Building, which will be
completed this summer, was
named for the late Dr. W. Hugh
McEniry, who as vice chancellor
for academic affairs helped
shape UNCC's academic
program. Dr. McEniry was
acting chancellor of Western
Carolina University until he
suffered a heart attack in
December of 1973. He died last
March.
The University's infirmary
was named the Edith Perryman
Brocker Health Center in honor
of Mrs. Brocker, who was
UNCC's first dean of nursing
and is now retired.
A 600-seat lecture hall in
the addition to the University
Center Building was named for
C. A. McKnight, editor of the
Charlotte Observer. Mr.
McKnight as a trustee of
Charlotte College helped to
bring it into the University
system as UNCC. Currently he is
a director of the UNCC
Foundation. The $2.6-million
addition to the University
Center is scheduled to be
completed in about 18 months.
The room now called the
Parquet Room in the present
University Center was officially
named for John Paul Lucas, a
vice president of Duke Power
Company. Mr. Lucas was a
member of the North Carolina
Board of Higher Education and
took part in crucial negotiations
to restructure higher education.
He is a former Charlotte College
trustee and holds an honorary
degree from UNCC.
The lake on the front of the
UNCC campus was named for
Dr. Herbert Hechenbleikner,
professor of biology. The
resolution naming the lake said
that Dr. Hechenbleikner created
the early landscaping ot UNCC
"out ot his imagination and the
sweat of his brow." The lake
will be more familiarly known
as "Heck's Lake."
Two large lecture halls in
the new Earth-Life Science
Building were named for two
Charlotte businessmen, William
H. Barnhardt and James G.
Cannon. Mr. Cannon helped
launch the Foundation of
UNCC with one of three initial
contributions. He was also the
second chairman of the
foundation board.
uncc news release
Mr. Barnhardt provided the
first quarters for the foundation
and was the third chairrrian of
the board. Both have continued
to support the foundation.
The courtyard of the Rowe
Creative Arts Building was
named the Dorton-Thomas
Court. It was named.for Mrs. A.
W. Thomas, Jr. of Concord and
her brother and father. Mrs.
Thomas and her brother, J.
Sibley Dorton, Jr. of Chapel
Hill, have been making
contributions to UNCC in
memory of their father, the late
Dr, Joseph Sibley Dorton. These
gifts provided a fountain for the
courtyard and will provide

Young Democrats
hope to create interest
This is the first of an as yet
unnamed newsletter to be
published monthly by the
Mecklenburg Young Democrats.
We hope that the newsletter,
like the Club and the Party, will
grow bigger and better. In order
to do so, we need your
assistance. Please let Barbara
Wall, our Publicity Chairperson,
(Route 11 Box 582, Charlotte
596-4808) know of any news,
comments, editorials, etc. that
you would like to have
included. Please submit these
before the fifth of each month.
We hope that this newsletter
will help keep all Mecklenburg
Democrats informed about
what's happening in the YDC
and the party.
The Mecklenburg YDC

on Thursday, January 23 at
Gus's Forty Niner Restaurant

great speakers-Luther Hodges,
Jr. and Rowe Motley, and lots

any member of the YDC
Executive Committee. Sales end
January 20, so hurry and
purchase yours. Please help the
YDC start the year off right by

We feel that our program
for the installation is the best
possible any club could
organize. Our main speaker is
by richard bober
Luther Hodges, Jr., a nationally
reknowned bander; our other
guest speaker is Rowe Motley,
newly elected Democrat to the
County Commission. The
banquet is at a beautiful facility
and is being handled by a
professiona- Gus's Forty Niner

$6.00 per person.
The worst thing we can do
is to let our guest speakers down
by having a poor turnout. We
feel that a goal of 100 people at
the banquet is very reasonable.
Please do not be bashful-call up
any member of the Executive
Board for tickets. They will be
more than happy to sell you as
may tickets as you need.
