Martin & McColl to be in Rathskeller
My concern in the
Rathskeller is to have something
for the students. I feel it is my
job to let students know what
the purpose of the room is. The
purpose of the Rathskeller is
not a party room, it’s a listening
room. We offer an
entertainment that is different
from anything available in
Charlotte, ” says Andy Pincus,
chairman of the Rathskeller
committee of the University
Program Board, on his relation
the room, the running of the
sound system and taking care of
the needs of the entertainers.
Prominent changes have
taken place in the Rathskeller
over the summer months. The
most visible chnage is the
addition of booths along the
outer perimeter of the
Rathskeller. Pincus explains the
reaoning behind the change
saying, “The whole idea was
that the Rathskeller in the past
was not an intimate room. It
improvements, including the
addition of hanging plants in the
back portion of the room.
Money stands in the way of
any further improvements but
Pincus says that if he could get
the funds he would like to paint
the area behind the stage to
mellow it a little. He would also
like to carpet the Rathskeller,
particularly the platforms where
the booths are located. Carpet
would help the sound which has
been one of the Rathskellers
Steve Martin is so often described as just another
banjo playing comedian magician that we’ve decided not
to use that here. We feel a simple biography will suffice.
Steve was born during a full moon in a first class cabin of
a luxury liner sailing from San Francisco to Tokyo. (His
parents had to pay an extra half-fare as they had only
booked reservations for two.) As a child he worked days
in a Japanese toy factory, modeling
arrows-through-the-head and at night attended a trade
school where he learned to trade nylons and chocolate
bars for small television sets and transistor radios. It was
only a short step from there to frequent appearances on
The Tonight Show which gave Steve the opportunity to
leave insomniac America wondering.
to the Rathskeller.
Pincus coordinates the
committee which chooses the
entertainment and does the
booking, working in
cooperation with the University
Program Board. He also
functions as the manager of the
Rathskeller as he is responsible
for tire physical maintenance of

was like walking into a cave, a
big, barren room There was no
feeling of intamacy for anyone
there.” With the booths lining
the area, everyone in the room
feels close to the stage. The
sound is better and there is
more privacy for the individual
or the small group.
John Knight designed the
improvements to the
Rathskeller along with Ken
Allman and Sid Bridges. Knight,
an Architecture student, is
Chairman of the University
Program Board. Most of the
improvements were coippleted
during the first summer session.
Pincus offers the view of the
Board saying. “We really think
it’s a classier room now.”
The new food service.
Professional Food Management,
has made improvements as well.
Tiffany lamps have been added
and paneling has been placed in
front of the counters. The food
service is planning more
major problems.
‘‘Professional Food
Management has taken a helluva
lot more interest in the
Rathskeller than Servomation
did. Servomation could not have
cared less about it. There was no
cooperation at all with the
students running the Rathskeller
and Servomation. It was a tax
write-off.” Professional Food
Management intends to gain a
profit out of the Rathskeller.
They are willing to advertise and
make improvements. As
attendence has fallen short of
expectations in the past,
Professional Food Management
is interested in suggestions from
the students.
As for the entertainment
aspect of the Rathskeller, the
first show is scheduled for
August 25-26. The program will
feature Steve Martin, a
nationally known comedian
who has appeared on the
Tonight Show. In Concert and
has toured with the Nittv Gritty
Dirt Band. Pincus said the
Rathskeller Committee
discovered from Bob Shaw and
Divided We Stand last year that
comedians draw good crowds.
Deborah McCall, who played in
a coffeehouse in the Rathskeller
this summer, will be opening for
Martin.
September will bring about
the return of Colors, a Colorado
based “country/boogie” band,
for two nights. Richard and
Susan Thomas, a pair of folk
singers, will also appear for two
nights in September. Pincus says
Susan has one of the most
outstanding voices he has heard.
In October, Morning Song,
a new group from Penn State,
will appear. Morning Song is
formed of a group of men who
decided to start their own
record company. There is a
good possibility the students
will be able to hear Morning
Song before their appearance on
campus as they may be sending
videotapes and albums for
promotion.
Frank Speiser, who does a
one man show entitled “The
World of Lenny Bruce” will be
in the Rathskeller in November.
The show consists of two acts.
The first act is Frank Speiser as
Lenny Bruce in his nightclub
performances and the second
act concerns the trial incidents
of Lenny Bruce.
Pincus plans a greater
emphasis on national talent for
the coming year. The
Coffeehouse Circuit of New
York, whom he is working with
along with Davidson,enables the
University Program Board to
pay $200 for entertainment that
would normally cost $700.
After the first song, the audience knows Deborah
McColl very well. She’s beautiful, self possessed,
enormously talented... and the emotion is raw. She
belongs to the audience. Deborah is determined to
communicate, determined that everybody feel... and
behind all that is real sincerity, real depth. What else is
{important ?■
She gathers her material from such artists as Jackson
Browne, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, her friends and
herself. But it is ultimately the singer, not the song that
matters, because she gathers her style from her heart,
which seems even bigger than the voice it powers.
Nobody sounds like Deborah, nobody even looks like
her; what comes from the stafe is completely Deborah
McColl.
It’s a magic show.
