49ers accept NCAA bid
By Ron Green
By know you know the
story. Sunday afternoon at
two o’clock, Willis Casey, a
member of the NCAA
tournament selection
committee, called UNCC
coach Lee Rose and
officially issued the 49ers a
bid to the NCAA
tournament. The 49ers will
play Central Michigan, the Mid
American Conference
Champion, Sunday
afternoon at four o’clock in
Bloomington, Indiana. The
game is a qualifying round
for the Mid-East Regional.
Should the 49ers win
their first game, they will
advance to Lexington,
Kentucky March 17 and 19
for the Mid-East Regional
title. Other teams in the
same regional are
top-ranked Michigan and
Tennessee.
When Rose made the
announcement to the press
just after three o’clock,
UNCC was supposed to
play Michigan or the
Southeastern Conference
champion'Tennessee. Casey
called back around 3:15 to
tell Rose that the 49ers had
been shifted to play the
Mid—American champion.
Members ot the press
had been waiting outside
Rose’s office in the
Athletic Department since
1:30. When asked why he
held the announcement for
an hour, Rose said, “Mr.
Casey said under no
circumstances was I say
anything until three. I
called the players in at
three and told them.
“I had to call Dr.
Colvard earlier to get
permission but that wasn’t
hard. This was the easiest
hour of wait. The hardest
was last night when I saw
all those basketball scores
on television.”
Talk had been
prevalant about UNCC’s
chances for a bid. When it
finally came. Rose said, “I
think it was expected. We
have worked hard and' I
think we deserve-' it. We
haven’t been bowled over
yet.
‘‘Getting in the
tournament will have a
lasting effect on UNCC and
the Sun Belt Conference.
Nothing could help the Sun
Belt more than us getting
in.”
This will be the second
consecutive year UNCC has
been involved in
post-season play. Last year
the 49ers were tunners-up
in the National Invitational
Tournament in New York
City. Rose said, “The NIT
may have had some
bearing. We tried to get
into the NCAA last year.
We may have demonstrated
they made a mistake.
“To go into the NCAA
is like going into the Nil’.
We have got some things to
prove and that is an area to
prove it.
“You’ve got something
here you can work a
lifetime for and never
get.”
